I’ve got a friend whose kid raced with Artem here in Georgia and knew a little of his family story. His dad is Alexey Shmidt, who was born in and raced in Russia in the early 2000s. PCS notes that Alexey was suspended for doping (after he retired), and my friend believed the main reason he’s in the US is because he got sideways with Russia’s doping authorities and had to leave for his safety.
