Max Poole. Perfect cyclist name, cause who else would you want on the front of a break?
Also, literally every Italian rider in the peloton.
He will always be Party Pants to me!
Nienke Vinke is hard to beat, but I also find Shirin van Anrooij fun to say. Expanding from the current peloton, Daniel Teklehaimanot is nearly a one-man iambic pentameter. His syllabic opposite, Lars Boom, is also a fun one. And if you want to expand the circle to people who have been featured in an @Iain_Treloar piece, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is a real gem of a name.
in light in the latest “pee bottle” allegations maybe Victor Crampandfarts should be AKA “the Urinator”
but cramp and farts is fun to say
As a Dutchman (and thus native Dutch speaker) I’m intrigued. How do you pronounce her name? Couldypu write it down phoneticly?
Also, Taco isn’t retired.
And yes, I’m well aware that my own name is a tongue-breaker as well ![]()
A conversation with my partner about Filippo Ganna’s nickname, “Pippo”, resulted in…. Filippo Pippo, which is a delight to say randomly to each other.
Elisa Longo Borghini
Victor Campernaerts
Cees Bol
Lars Craps on the men’s side … and Amber Kraak on the women’s, just because it sounds like a really dodgy nightclub drug.
I still have no idea how to pronounce the former (even after hearing it many times on commentary) and I’m fascinated how two Visma elites are american with names you wouldn’t expect (Sepp and Matteo)
I still want to know why G calls him Waistband?!
I think Paul Double is the most fun. He’s a Brit so it’s pronounced dubble but because he’s in a largely mainland european sport there’s a innate desire to say Doublay! I even met another Brit watching the Giro TT in Lucca last year who pronounced it like that. Strangely that guy seemed to assume we were related to one of the British riders, because why else would we be watching ![]()
I really enjoy the alliterating rhythm of Ruby Roseman-Gannon and Danilo Di Luca
Bob Jungels also known as Young Bubbles to listeners of a certain dutch cycling podcast.
Eulalio feels like an illegal ratio of vowels to consonants
Nienke Vinke? I’ve only heard it pronounced on English commentary so it’s probably way off.
Both names rhyme with sink, like kitchen sink, with an “Ah” on the end. “Nink-Ah Vink-Ah”.
How close is that to the real pronunciation?
I defy you to say Monica Trinca Colonel and not enjoy it
Haha. Here you can hear at least how “Nienke” is pronounced. Vinke is close to the French ‘fin’ and ‘qu’. The ‘k’ in Dutch is always a ‘straight in your face’ pronunciation, so quite hard and out there.
I thought Matty O’Jorgenson was Irish![]()
Benoît Cosnefroy to the tune of Encore Une Fois
