Have some surgery coming up in a month or so. Fairly minor but am likely to be recommended not to ride for 6-8 weeks. To minimise performance losses, any views or experiences on whether best to concentrate on HIIT or low intensity endurance work until the operation? Maybe it’s not going to make any difference and fine to carry on as usual with a structured mix. My thing is time trials and I usually train consistently over winter to be ready for early season events.
I would personally do as much threshold and VO2 work as I could in your situation, mostly because I find that’s the hardest area to build up again
Just enjoy riding and maintain as much volume as you want. You lose high intensity capacity fast but it will be something you can rebuild on the other side.
I have had a knee replaced and currently recovering from a bunion op. In both cases I stuck to my usual on bike training but did some research around diet and specific pre- habbing around the areas likely to be affected . So I started some yoga and flexibility work- which I’ve maintained, did a bit more strength training and altered my diet. Post surgery followed Surgeons advice to the letter and counted calories…I’m in my 60’s so getting weight off once you put it on is always challenging due to lower metabolic rate with age. Lots of very good info out there.
