Just read your post and it’s timely. I’ve used hearing aids since I was prob 5-ish. I’m due for a new set and was looking at Phonak for the water/sweat resistance. I suspect the developers are coding the product for the masses and not considering those who are active.
Curious; Has the app been updated since this post?
Hi Bruce,
Yes the app has been updated, but not in any helfpful way - just the usual annoying redesign of the UI in case you were getting familiar with how it works.
I am unaware of any updates to the aids firmware that might improve the noise response.
Sadly I’ve found myself wondering if other brands are better at noise control but I’ve not done any research, and I gather from your question that these are still unique for having water resistance.
I did just buy the latest airpods and their hearing aid function is disappointingly inadequate for my level of hearing loss.
Thanks! I have a severe loss (congenital) and never ever having has normal hearing I don’t miss what I never had. lol. That said, requiring internet access to control the aid is pretty backwards. I’ll be buying a set next month and will try to remember to send a note on what I find.
Oh, sorry I misunderstood which functionality you were referring to.
In an extraordinary example of the irony of the universe, they did update the app just after my recent “no internet” incident and my brain exploded to see that they were proudly boasting that I wouldn’t need the internet to adjust my aids in future.
That said, I’d swear I did actually run into the same “no internet” warning since then, but maybe I was still able to access the controls after dismissing the message. These things start to blur after a while.
It might be that “the first time” means the first time each day, not just the first time since the update?
Hey David, do your airpods not catch your helmet straps?
My helmet straps cause a tapping sound on the microphone and risk pulling the pods out of my ears, because my helmet straps fit perfectly just under my ears and they’re not adjustable.
Only when first putting on the helmet. I strap it on and put the AirPods on, then make sure they’re not in conflict. After that, they don’t touch anymore…
Pods always fall out of my ears. Shokz are somewhat uncomfortable, but anytime I’m at faster speeds, it’s very hard to hear. I am going to trial the Noxgear 39g BT mini-speaker. It looks a little lame and hopefully doesn’t bother many around, but I tend to ride early in the morning when everyone is still sleeping. So hopefully it works well for me! https://www.noxgear.com/39g
I use Sony WF-C700. Left ear only (I’m in Japan and we ride on the left side). The Sony earbuds are very small and fit perfectly inside the ear. They are button shaped with nothing protruding so fit extremely well under winter caps without being uncomfortable at all. So discreet that others may not even notice you are wearing it.
AirPod Pro 2 in right ear only (or left ear when in New Zealand/UK) with a Comply Tip so it does not blow out on 30+ MPH decent… I have lost two ear pods with the stock tip, but the Comply Tip fixes that. I have not tried AirPod 3’s yet; those are supposed to stay in-ear better. I’ll go AirPod 3 when the batteries are fried on my AirPod 2’s.
Don’t think these have been mentioned but I really like Jabra elite 8 active earbuds. Water resistant, good clear sound, very good ANC which you can toggle on/off. Never fall out. Long battery life and case holds 3-4x charge for very long days. They have stopped making them but plenty around online, it seems.
