Not sure if itās the channels in my skull from almost half a century of wearing glasses or wearing the bow of the headphones quite low on my neck but I have never noticed any problems, unlike with the (unadjustable Abus GC) helmet straps even without additional accessories.
Aftermarket silicon tips helped the (already pretty good) retention of AirPods Pro 2s for me. And theyāre cheap.
Iāve tried foam tips that slip over and extend the tip, as well as hooks around my ears. Iāve given up using my Pro 1s outside the house.
Iāll probably try the 3s when we get home. I wonāt be able to resist.
Same. Uncomfortable for me too. Both with headbands and full caps. I just listen to the sound of the cold on those days.
Would I be right in thinking Airpods would be pretty useless if you donāt have an iPhone?
No, you can connect them to any BT device. You wonāt have all the integrated Apple features, but they will still work as earbuds.
I have connected mine to my TV, to airplane video screens, etc.
Can you access things like the different noise cancelling settings without an iPhone?
That I donāt knowā¦never tried.
Have you tried earbuds with foam in ear buds?
Yup.
I think Iāve mentioned this in another post - I have Comply brand aftermarket memory foam tips on my Shure earphones and they are much better than standard foam tips and Iāve also bought them to try on my airpods. I dont really understand what it is about my outer ears that is different to those who can wear airpod successfully - I think they must be too flat? Having had ear moulds for plugs and hearing aids, I know my ear canal openings are very narrow and flat - not circular at all. I think that makes it hard for the tips to seal and grip as well.
Same Iām therefore a long time comply customer. They also have the plus that they can make cheap earphones work as good as a lot more expensive ones (from a sound/noise cancelling perspective)
One of the more infuriating aspects of my Phonak hearing aids is that I have to use an app on my phone to adjust the programme and microphone volume when riding - and if the app has been updated since last use it has to talk to the internet before it will let me make those adjustments!
So here we are camping in the bush, with starlink in our van but I turned that off while we went for a ride - only to find that the Phonak app wouldnāt connect so I couldnāt choose my riding programme to reduce the wind noise.
Why do programmers think this is OK? Do they assume we check every app status before doing anything? The app uses bluetooth, surely the settings are stored on the phone! It should have a fall back mode so I can do basic stuff without needing the internet!
Phoar!
Sorry this is a bit off topic unless others are considering hearing aids. ![]()
Yes, you can. I have a pair of AirPods Pro 2 that Iāve used on a linux computer. The various noise cancelling modes (Transparency, Adaptive, Noise Cancellation) all work, and can be cycled through the normal way (pinching the stem of either side).
Worth noting I could not get to the āoffā mode ā which Iād argue youād never want to use. I think thatās because previously when I paired the AirPods to my iPhone, I setup what modes were available. I set it to cycle between those three above, and not ever cycle to āoffā mode. Point being, the modes available on a brand new pair are probably whatever Apple defaults to, and they canāt be changed without an iPhone/iPad. If I had to guess, the default is all 4 modes activated.
Huawei freebuds pro 4. They are remarkable. Great fit. Great sound. Next Level mic. Phone call on bike arent a problem. Sounds great for the receiver. Cheap. My search is over.
I always use windfree or buff over earbuds
I got so annoyed by my Phonak hearing aids not letting me change settings on a ride again this week when we went out of phone coverage that I decided I really had to try new airpods - the next morning I listened to @Jonny_Long explaining the fines for riding with earphones in Spain!!
I wonder if the police would believe me if I said Iām using them as hearing aids?? ![]()
Iād already realised this was a potential issue because as @caley_fretz mentions, it seems rude for people to wear airpods while talking to you. ![]()
Update to my search - I got a different cheap set - Soundcore p30i - (an airpod pro clone re shape) they definitely did the job re eliminating wind noise but didnāt feel very secure since no retaining clip. I then got cheap memory foam tips and slip on silicone covers that have a little retention tab- solved all the fit problems and no wind noise in ānormalā mode. A great solution for around $45 all in. I can even smash down the case and still get them to change without removing the silicone covers (case wonāt fully close but while charging/sitting on desk itās not a problem) .
Urbanista Athens were the best Iāve used, mostly because they never fell out. I ride almost exclusively on country roads and highways and find I can still hear the cars coming whichever buds I use.
and now Iām trialling my new $$$ airpods in hearing aid mode and it seems my hearing loss exceeds their amplification capacity. ![]()
The bluetooth streaming is excellent but I feel like I canāt get them to amplify the required voice frequencies to āfixā ambient spoken conversations or tv as well as my annoying hearing aids can.
I guess I need a genius bar appointment to see if they can make them work bettererer.
I really liked the Powerbeats Pro and now am using the 2nd generation. I use the buds daily for listening around the house or rides. I often go on long gravel rides in a national forest and listen to podcasts or music. Using the Powerbeats Pro in the past worked well except for two fatal flaws-battery life and charging. Often one bud would not charge even placed properly in the case. The battery life also got to the point where I could only get about 2 hours out of listening until the left bud died (well short of the advertised length). I had had sent them to Apple at east twice to be serviced only to have Apple return them saying they were within spec. I am now about 4 months in to using the Powerbeats Pro II and all the previous issues seem to have been resolved. No issues charging them and battery life is at least 5 hours. The noice cancellation and transparency modes work well but eat into battery life. I donāt use the HR function. I am in the Apple ecosystem and they work phenomally well. They magically follow my devices as I go from iPhone to MacBook. I was able to get a certified refurbished pair from Target for about $150. I do notice wind noise while descending but I donāt have another device to compare so not sure if this is more or less than typical.
