I know. I am an idiot for sometimes riding with earbuds. But let that be my problem, and lets not use this thread to discuss if I should or should not continue to do this.
Anyone else out there that has some experience with earbuds? I am mainly concern with models/features that deal with wind noise better than the ones i currently use.
I don’t use earbuds on the road, but for the last 2 years or so, I’ve been using Beats Fit Pro earbuds. The sound is good, and the noise cancelling is good. They have, however, occasionally fallen out. I think I’m going to switch to the Powerbeats Pro 2 simply because they have a thin piece that wraps part way around the ear.
I use Anker Soundcore Life A1 buds - no active noise cancellation but they don’t need it, for me they’re a perfect fit and they reduce not increase wind noise. I think the key is not having parts of the bud sticking out into and catching the wind like Airpods do. I had another set of Ankers like that (P20?) which were unusable as the stalks generated deafening wind noise.
And to join you in heading off criticism - I can hear extraneously enough to be able to differentiate between my different wheel sets, hear cars before my Varia picks them up and have conversations with horse riders as I slowly pass them. I can imagine using ANC might stop this but as above it’s not needed.
I will at times use a right ear only Bose Ultra bud with noise canceling. Works especially well if it’s just music I’m listening to as the volume can remain lower. Can hear the traffic just fine with my left side.
I do the same - only not Bose, and left ear only. Have done for years and on nearly every solo ride (although I’m about 98% MTB these days). I rarely enjoy riding as much without music, quite honestly, and I end up singing my daughter’s ear worm TV theme tunes / latest pop rubbish / musical theatre scores if I don’t have it in.
For me it’s the no-longer-produced Nura earbuds, but they got bought out by Denon so they’re now the Denon PerL. Not at all designed for sports but perfectly capable, and never bounced out even on the lumpiest of trails I ride.
I’ve used AirPods Pro on the bike for the last 3-4 years. They’re great (but I don’t have any point of comparison with other buds). The “adaptive” mode does a good job of mixing noise cancelling and letting other sounds through. They are absolutely not designed for use on a bike, so they are far from perfect for this use, but the pros outweigh the cons.
I’ll tell you what not to get: Shokz. Absolutely worthless on a bike, you can’t hear anything. I use them on runs, and they’re fine (if cars aren’t driving by), but on a bike the constant wind noise means at full volume you still can’t make out a single word in a podcast. (No knock against Shokz, necessarily, I don’t know that they market them for bike riding.)
Agree on AirPods Pro recommendation - noise cancel works well enough and significant step up from my old wired Yrbuds (discontinued I think?). And they are remarkably stable in ear, never once worried about fallling out which was my pre purchase concern.
Following because my new google Pixel buds pro 2 are horrible with wind noise, I resorted to a cheap $25 Amazon airpod style set until I can figure out if I want to spend more to get something else recommended. But I cannot stress how disappointed I am with my pixel buds pro 2 (gen 1 non pro previously actually worked pretty well before I got them wet in in my pocket while fishing the surf)
Another happy AirPods pro user on the bike here. Suitable for music or podcasts.
Even with the ANC enabled I can still hear traffic around me. Coupled with my Wahoo’s lights flashing when the varia detects a car it’s been a fine experience.
I LOVE jaybird vistas, unfortunately they were acquired and discontinued but you can still get them on various marketplaces. I’ve been buying pairs as they pop up on FB Marketplace and Ebay after I lost my originals.
Great sound quality, they keep wind noise out and are basically indestructible (I sent my pair through the washing machine twice).
Another happy airpods pro user here. Ive been using them for a couple of years now and have never had an issue with having one fall out. With transparency mode enabled, I can listen to music or podcasts and still be able to hear what’s going on around me.
Im the past I have used samsung buds pro 2 but they were far from ideal. I used their version of transparency mode but the sound was awful and bar using noise cancelling they were as good as unusable on the bike.
I use the Samsung buds FE and find them quite good. If I’m going down a hill at 50km/h the wind noise overpowers the audio, but for the rest of my ride they’re fine.
Tell you what really improves wind noise: Airstreamz Cat Ears. But whether you can live with the aesthetics is another question.
The more I cycle, the less I care about aesthetic rules. I recon I need to cycle for still a few more years to be able to live with those Cat Ears though.
I use Earfun Air (purchased from.Amazon)… very similar in shape to airbuds but a fraction of the price. The wind noise isn’t horrendous. They get a good review on What Hi-Fi too. I’ve tried loads of different in ear designs and found these to fit well. I’d prefer a design without the stick but my ear shape isn’t conducive to keeping them in place.
Not a specific type but every in ear is better with some foam eartips (comply for example). As good as no wind noise so you can put the volume way down
Yeah I was pretty happy with my gen 1 As so I thought I would treat myself to the pro2s but literally unusable for anything above walking pace on bike, in every mode (normal, ANC, open etc) I even bought some little silicone covers and intentionally rotated them to cover the mics but made zero difference. Additionally, they make a “tap” noise with every step harder than a tiptoe, so annoying for walking let alone running
Same here: the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are really quite loose fitting and therefore let a lot of wind noise in. I went back to using the Pixel Buds A-series, which seal a lot better.
