I respect Eric Topol as a thorough public health journalist. There is always good data behind his writing. I found this intriguing and certainly counter to what I see from most media. I thought others might find it useful for making their own decisions. Our Preoccupation With Protein Intake - by Eric Topol
There is just so much advice around. Yesterday I listened to one pod that said to have breakfast late for weight loss, and another to have breakfast early for heart health. I guess it’s all good, and nice to see Eric isn’t just sitting around fiddling on the roof.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing!
Peter Atilla and Huberman are very convincing. Eric Topol is convincing. One angle that is missing for me from Eric’s analysis: I am interested in what is best for young men, who are endurance athletes and strength train. The populations of many of the cited studies are not so applicable when clearly the needs for obese, elderly, sedentary individuals are drastically different.
I really enjoyed watching the below video. I’m not an expert in longevity, but I did read the study in question and am a physician-scientist who studies humans, as well as try-hard endurance athlete who finds all of his literature very interesting. I’m not sure if those are qualifications, but that’s my background, and this video was spot-on.
Below is also a link to the study on PubMed and below that is a link from my box account to the full text PDF of the study which I am allowed to share under the terms of my academic library license.
As a bodybuilder turned cyclist I struggle with this. I don’t need the high levels of protein I once consumed but I still target 1g/lb (I used to surpass this) because if I’m burning 3500-6000 calories a day it is quiet east to hit targets and it is a great way to feel satiated. I still lift to maintain a certain physique so as to not completely disappoint my wife.
High protein often comes with high fat if you’re not careful so this could be a correlation with atherosclerosis as well? I read about the leucine pathway but I’d like to think that on my rest days I intermittent fast and this helps the body clear out the crap that is inhibited by high protein intake. Also.. completely unscientific.. my internal gauge of too much protein is stinky protein farts.. If my farts aren’t stinky, my body must be using the fuel for repair ha!
