Hello Collective pals!
I’m looking for recommendations on gravel wheels that can survive my identity crisis on the bike… Sometimes it’s smooth asphalt, sometimes rough gravel, and every now and then I find myself on singletrack wondering how I got there
What wheels would you suggest for a rider who mixes it all—gravel, pavement, and random trails—with zero consistency?
Looking for something light(ish), tough, and fast… or am I dreaming?
I’ve got some e thirteen xcx r carbon wheels on my Lauf. They have been great. I too find myself riding things on my gravel bike that 25 years ago I was riding on an mtb. Light, tough and expensive!!!
I’d recommend the Roval Terrra CL. Reasonably priced and very versatile along with the always-reliable DT350 hub. I’ve used them with 35mm slicks for road rides and on 42mm gravel tyres for more gnarly stuff.
Specialized have a reasonable warranty for wheels too, as a safety net.
Campagnolo Levante. Beautiful, shiny and made to last and of course top notch engineering (no rim tape needed e.g.). You can get them for half of the recommended price at online retailers like bike24 in Europe.
I would recommend the Reserve 40|44 GR. It’s the fastest wheel with a no questions asked lifetime warranty, hooked, good value, resonably light. Also the wheel spec’d on the new Aspero 5 which has a similar identity crisis.
My favorites are the ENVE 3.4’s. I’ve put them through hell over the last 5 years and haven’t even needed to tru them. Not as good of valus as the Reserves and they recently reworked their warranty to be a bit less extensive which is a bummer.
I previously had the Roval Terra CL - as above, great versatile wheels *and a good price). Recently upgraded to the Reserve 40/44GR as I wanted something deeper for racing and with a wider internal rim to better support the bigger tyres I run now. You can’t go wrong with either.
Thank you all for the recommendations. I forgot to mention that I live in Chile, and the warranty issue with gravel wheels—especially those used in varied conditions (including single tracks)—is a key factor for me. I bought Reynolds road wheels in the USA about eight years ago and had a rim failure. At that time, they didn’t have a representative in my country, and they asked me to send the wheel back to them for inspection before agreeing to replace it. The shipping and taxes to send it there and bring it back would have cost me about the same as buying a new wheel. Anyway, thank you again for the recommendations!
One more upvote for the Terras (CLX II, if you’re feeling fancy), and I’d also recommend the Zipp 303 Firecrest, too. As long as you’re mindful of the TSS limitations (and they’re not as onerous as many people like to make out), they’re pretty good at most things
I actually think Specialized has an excellent wheels warranty in my experience. They have given me new wheels and rebuilt wheels that have had spokes break at no charge.
Do you have any experience with the comfort of these wheels? Like Pablo, I am also looking for a do-it-all gravel wheelset. I currently ride DT Swiss G1800 wheels with 44 mm tyres and am concerned that much higher carbon rims will feel too hard. However, I still think that an upgrade in terms of aerodynamics and weight would be worthwhile.
I also find the Duke Baccara RX36 or RX42 wheels tempting. Does anyone happen to have any experience with these?
Another vote for the Terras! CLX in my case, but I believe the rim is the same on the CL’s (just some fancy DT 180 internals). So much more comfortable than the Zipp 303 FC (older model, 2019 I believe) I was running before.
I second this. I have the cheaper version, Roval Terra C’s which now have about 17,000 miles under my 215 lbs and they have been bombproof. Mostly road but also some fire roads and smooth socal single track (maybe 100 miles of dirt, riding a Spz Roubaix).
