Has anyone tried Dt swiss’s GR1600? Especially interested to find out how they stack up against the Terras if anyone has ridden both
My vote for the Curve G4T, I have 45 mm set-up tubeless with Maxxis Ramblers that handles the range of terrain you describe (Great Ocean Road & Otway trails in Australia) - tariffs into US may make them unappealing in that geography. Road Bike Wheels & Rims | Carbon Bike Wheels – Curve Cycling
I have tbe November ( I assume they are Light Bicycle) Allroads with Industry Nine and White Indistries hubs in the 35 and 50 depth .
I have been super hard on them . Not as good as my MTB Reserves ( their warranty is exceptional ) but ok for the price.
My enve M525 were insanely stiff and fast but I like the Reserves, bit more forgiving . Also usually DT 350 hubs.. so easy to get parts.
If my Novembers fail ( 4 years gravel , 5 on road ) I’ll get Reserves.
I second this suggestion. I have a set of Roval Terra C as well. Love them. Absolutely bombproof. I have beaten them pretty hard off road with zero issues
Potentially cheaper option than off shelf options.
My gravel bike finds its way to all the same situations you list. Personally, I have 700 and 650b wheels that I switch between based on knowledge of planned route, based on planned route. 650b wheels are fitted with wider tyres.
I realise that’s not an option for all however, so one wheelset to cover all recommendation would be hand built custom, with 25mm internal carbon rims and 28 sapin CX-ray spokes. You can go surprisingly lightweight if you are also willing to run inserts, but that does have an impact (pun not intended) on tyre feel, and means you have to run them a couple of psi lower.
25mm internal rim width works with road tyres of 30c or similar, right up to 2.2 MTB tyres. If you are planning to fit road slicks below 35c, go hooked. If not, hookless is fine. If only running 50c tyres or bigger, 28mm internal rim width might be worth considering.
Both my wheelsets are direct from China rims, dynamo front hub, CX-ray spokes, and inserts. They may have been thrown down the odd red trail at Glentress, and have survived things like the rough descent on the north side of corrieyairack pass with only some scratches from flying rocks to show for it.
Zipp 303S - Hookless, which might put some folk off, but seems this is more acceptable with fatter tyres. I really like them, great value
I have the e*thirteen Piedmont alloy race wheels that came OEM on my Lauf. I had marked them for quick upgrade on purchase, and have been trying to trash them by doing enduro things on my Lauf. But they just dont’ flinch, other than some minor truing on the rear after botching a shelf drop. Raced on ‘em a bunch too.
Light(ish), inexpensive. tough AF. Some day I’ll upgrade ‘em, particularly because I’m riding 57mm tires and they don’t even wave in the general direction of aero. But I’m impressed with them.
