Looking for the Escape Collective’s recommendations for deep Winter bibs please
I’m looking for some low temperature. Wind and highly water resistant bibs
Currently using 7Mesh TK1s and Albion 3 season tights, but looking for something a little more weatherproof for wet commutes and getting winter miles in
Castelli Polare were almost too good at keeping me warm but lacked a bit when the roads were lightly wet. The Sorpasso line was better for wet days but I believe that was discontinued as it was a pfas product.
Can vouch for the Velocio Zero+ for those absolutely miserable 1ºC and pissing rain days, but fenders will do more for you than any amount of waterproofing.
I’ve got an older version of the Pearl Izumi AmFib tights that work well for me in the cold. Can’t speak for wet performance because I rarely ride in the wet by choice. Agree with Catherine that full fenders should be at the top of the list for wet conditions.
I’ve worn Castelli Nanoflex bib tights down to ~20F / -6C with wool ski socks as a mitigation. Works pretty well moving fast-ish with a warm core. Like @Peter_Burghardt , I can’t speak to freezing rain because I mostly avoid it. I have a pair of old Gore tights for the coldest of the cold days, and have worn down to, I dunno -5F / -20C at a Cross race one year. I overheated. But Gore Wear is RIP and I never loved the fit, so that doesn’t help you much.
I just ordered a pair of assos MILLE GTO Winter Bib Tights C2 for this purpose. Unfortunately haven’t had a chance to test them yet, but media reviews are generally pretty positive about everything except the price. Through the Assos Outlet website the price is a bit more palatable.
When I was browsing, the other options that looked like they had potential included:
Gore Distance Winter Bibtights (out of stock on Gore’s website but a retailer might have them)
The Albion ones mentioned
Santini Vega Dry. Sound good on paper and the C3 pad is my favourite of all the ones I’ve tried. But concerned about the integrated base layer - feels like making it twice as hard to get the fit right.
Another Albion Deep Winter tight user (in addition to the three season). If it’s going to be persistent rain, then I’d chuck overtrousers on, either the deep winter or 3 season depending on how cold/ wind chill.
Reason being that the foot stirrups on the deep winter tights mean there’s bottom of tights sealing off my winter boot from the rain = soggy feet.
I’ve also found thermal running tights can be a good over layer for otherwise comfortable but not quite warm enough tights.
I did try some Endura tights with great windproof and waterproof panels. Unfortunately the seams for the panels were really poorly manufactured and rubbed so much, they gave me sores!
Loving my Pissei Primapelle bib tights. Comfy, warm, they just feel amazing on the bike no matter the temp. I’m very picky about chamois, and their’s is my favorite. And the color selection is pretty cool as well! Pissei is the Italian brand that sponsors UAE btw.
Castelli Sorpasso or Sorpasso Wind for when it’s particularly unpleasant. I see an earlier reply saying that these are no longer available which will be very disappointing when my current pairs wear out.
The X2 pad is a favourite of mine so hopefully there’s an alternative design?
When I requested a crash replacement for my Sorpasso bibs this year, Castelli said it was the last one they had. Everywhere else had them on closeout in early spring this year and EC has reported that Castelli’s move away from pfas was 2025.
I have been trying an alternative - normal bibs or thermal bibs + leg warmer layer with cycling pants over top such as Bontrager Old Man Winter pants. For whatever reason I find the winter tights a bit too snug at the knees, with the exception of the Pealizumi Amfib ones with windproofing.
Windstopper bibs without chamois (mine are Gonso but whatever), optionally thermal underwear in between (either short Craft Gund* with a windstopper crotch or plain long), regular summer shorts (personally I prefer non-bib for this) or liner shorts with chamois underneath, works for me down to -20C.
At some point cycling clothes run out of steam as most manufacturers make believe that it doesn’t go below four degrees, probably because where they live it rarely does. My experience is that even windstopper tights don’t work as you inevitably get windburn on non windstopper parts and toes still freeze as shoes in overshoes get damp.
So I’ll be giving my ski touring gear and ski helmet with closing vents a go on the mtb as I’ve got over the psychological challenge of getting my pristine snow only gear filthy. My Norrona softshell suit is quite tightly cut and works fine in minus ten 3000m up a mountain so should be fine for minus two.
