Castelli merino, mid-length, the more colorful the better. I wear merino socks year round for cycling or anything. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter. Better cushioning than most artificial fiber socks.
Most of my favorites have already been well covered (Silca, Defeet, etc) so I’ll skip those and add one more option not mentioned so far….Mint.
Extremely comfortable, thin, cool with lots of great colors. I use some not only for riding but also for socks with my work clothes.
Rapha classic merino have lasted very well, used for spring through autumn.
Present winter fave is Endura Baa Baa merino, I expect the Scots know a bit about keeping warm in the winter!
Cold weather - DEFEET WOOLIE BOOLIE
Warm weather - whichever heavily discounted & loud pair that roughly suit, pick from Rapha, Pongo, MAAP, etc
Fingerscrossed or bust for Summer. They’ve lasted 5+ years without holes, losing compression, or pilling.
Cafe du Cycliste Primaloft for Winter. These may be the nicest (and warmest) cycling socks I’ve ever owned… and they should be at their price. If I had the means, these are the only socks I’d wear all winter. Even off the bike.
This happens to my bikepacking socks where I’m on the bike all day and I have to hike-a-bike. That is why I’m trying Darn Tough for bikepacking and some gravel.
Northern hemisphere winter here so defeet wolly boolie 6in cuff.
All I wear outside from October-April
Fingerscrossed vote too, the light merino-silk are great in winter boots, the classics have great colour choices https://fingerscrossed.design/products/011-classic-lilac
Comfortable fit, wash and wear well after many rides.
Silca wool socks for the win! At least when it’s cold. Very rare i need shoe covers.
I have several pair of the Silca aero socks, but i like them more because they are thin and cool in the warmer months rather than aero.
However, (Silca) Pink socks (or any brand for that manner are the best! Hard to say someone didn’t see you with dayglo socks on!
Wow, just scanned through and found a few names I wasn’t familiar with, so thanks! However, I am surprised that nobody mentioned socks from Sockeloen (at least that I saw in my quick scan). I love their socks, and they make a 19cm length that looks appropriate on my legs.
For winter socks, I am currently nursing through my last few pairs of Swiftwick Pursuit “Business 8”” socks. These were absolutely the perfect sock for me, and I’d buy them by the half-dozen in years past, but they’ve been discontinued for a few years now. I’m keen to try the Silca Wool socks, they look like they might be a good option.
Defeet and Ridge Supply (Defeet is the manufacturer for Ridge Supply).
Recognizing this entire thread is about regular socks—we should do a separate one for aero socks. I’ve found there is a much wider range of good to bad…
Here’s me thinking the ultimate winner here was already the Silca Aero socks haha. But we could run a separate one for them, supposedly speedier socks next year… ![]()
I hear you Suvi—but those aren’t “true” aero socks ![]()
Does anyone think the Silca socks are actually aero, though? I love mine, but any claimed aero benefit is purely secondary to me….they are just incredibly comfortable and that is enough.
My favorite socks are a brand new unwashed pair.
If I can’t have those every day then 1 of these 3 will have to suffice.
Silca socks and wax I definitely bought for the “marginal gains” originally but stayed for the comfort and cleanliness/longevity of drivetrain components.
Pongo! Love my Pongo winter socks too. Sadly closed down now ![]()
I bought 8 pairs before they closed👌
My favorite go-tos are my Assos RS Socks Targa (Holy White). I bought four pairs while I was still living in Europe and care for them as if they’re part of the family…
Love these, they’re a hidden gem: affordable and durable (if hand-washed), though the elastic could be better.
