If there is one type really above the rest for me, that are the Rapha Deep Winter socks (almost up to the knees). Superbly warm and comfortable. Doing their fifth winter season now and still going strong.
In summer, I mostly use Rapha Pro Team socks, for the colour variety, and some others thrown in the mix (again, for more colour choices).
DeFeet! My oldest pair were a gift from a friend at least ten years ago. I still have them. No holes. Worn weekly. I can’t remember all of the product lines or names, but have acquired many kinds over the years. Some are mostly nylon summer weight socks; some thin wool;
some thick wool (woolie boolies). All of them fit well and last forever. Good on and off bike. I also have one random pair of Castelli winter weight wool socks that are great. Smartwool ski socks below 20F / -7C or so make bib knickers scale nicely into Winter temperatures. I am a big baby about socks and gloves, and have many variations of each for various conditions.
For winter riding/commuting, I really like the costco wool socks (fairly good value tbh), and I tape shut the vent hole on the sole of the shoes. If its very cold, I rely on those socks and the nonvented Fizik Artica R5 shoes (the thickest, warmest socks can only do so much with a vent-ridden shoe).
I really like the Silca aero socks. They often have them on special and that’s when I pick them up. I have white and grey colors mostly, but also one pair each of flouro pink and yellow. (I also would buy flouro purple as asked for above!)
Some other preferences of mine:
I also like the massively overcoloured DeFeet socks with the multicolored fades (but it’s hard to match them up with kit without looking like a clown)
I cannot stand wool socks of any type. I’ve got hyper sensitive skin and any wool contacting it (even “merino” wool, which is surely nearly all clothing wool anyway) is massive no from me.
I also have this one pair of socks that came with a Panda Podium order, if you can stand the “PANDA POWER” text down the back, I find them really comfortable. Not sure if they are very aero though.
For cooler days Loomi socks, they’re lovely merino wool socks. Really cold day I wear my skiing socks, the full shin coverage helps keep my feet a little warmer. For summer I had Pongo socks, but they are no more, so I’ll need to look for new brands for my next round of purchases.
+1 Feetures. Elite Ultra Light Mini Crew. The uppers are some sort of dual layer magic with a density of fabric woven to just the right compression. Not one mention of cycling on their website.
The cycling socks I wear most are the various pairs I got for free as event swag. If I’m buying, my first stop is Darn Tough.
Note on sock life: All of my socks last much longer since I started using an emery board after clipping my nails. In workshop terms, think of it as “deburring”.
I like Darn Tough socks in general, even was slowly replacing all my everyday socks with Darn Tough, but they don’t hold a candle when it comes to cycling compared with Silca’s. Really noticeable after a long ride, when the soles of my feet are in much better condition after wearing Silca aero socks vs. DT ultra-lightweights. And unlike Silca gravel socks, the heavier DT weights don’t keep my toes noticeably warmer until getting to the significantly thicker ones that take up way more (non-existent) shoe volume.
Question. Most people seem to wear out the toes. But I mostly have trouble with the heels. I don’t get holes really, but it’s like the fabric stretching thin at the heel, especially with tighter cycling-specific socks. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?
I have had a fairly good experience with Decathlon’s Van Rysel 900 socks. 8.99 a pair, good option of plain colours (I hate socks with stupid designs), comfortable and stay up. Their aero socks are also great, stay up really well. Also got a good selection of defeet, just find some models are a little lower than I like. Invested in a couple pairs of the silca aero socks, I like how they look like a normal sock, not overly fussed about the aero benefit. Yet to use them yet.
While I like Swiftwick and even better are the Silca, my go to socks are either Velocio or best are Incyclence. Incyclence are super comfy and have a really awesome color way. Check them out here: Cycling Essentials | Socken, Headwear & mehr – INCYLENCE
