Aerotesting In what order?

Opinions on what to test and in what order.

I don’t see much point in testing skinsuits, given their price I’ll get one and commit.

I’m thinking that these in this order based on expected gains.

  • helmets
  • Low extensions / high extensions
  • Hand positions
  • Sock or overshoe combo.
  • front wheel changes
  • baselayers

Have you done much aero testing in the past?

If so, the ordering doesn’t matter that much. I tend to test things first that don’t require complicated addition or removal with tools, especially things that require a torque wrench or measurement of angles–but that’s mostly cuz I often forget the torque wrench or the protractor. There are small interactions between changes but keeping track of interactions is kind of a pain.

If you don’t have much experience with testing, then I’d say that’s an ambitious list and the first time or two I’d just pay attention to general testing procedures and protocols so I know what it’s like to use that course and to hold your position as fixed as possible while varying speed and holding the same line through corners–and watching out for cars, trucks, dogs, potholes, wet leaves, and other riders.

As Robert wrote, get used to testing first of all, if you arent and dont plan too many different things for your first test. Remember to do baseline repeats from time to time. This is far easier with helmets or hand positions, as its an easy change.
As Robert also briefly touched, it all interacts with each other, so you can blow up the tests by a lot if you want to check all those interactions.
Due to this I have been thought in my guided velodrome aero tests that you want to test positions (so extensions, hand positions) first and once you know the fastest ones there go to helmets.

This wasn’t a plan for a single session but rather working out a general plan for a season of testing. I’m sure more questions will rear their ugly heads as I get into it.

Most upstream elements first makes complete sense.

A:as is, B:TT extensions out to UCI limit C:B+10mm drop of handlebars. D: B+extension shimmed E: bad science many changes but essentially, baslayer and overshoe changes.

0.25ish to 0.22ish or 30Wish.

Basically taking my untested but seemingly comfortable setup and getting it as close to the UCI limits as possible. Dropping the stack 10mm wasn’t productive became unstable. But if it was faster something to work on.

I was using my HJC AdWatt but I guess next is testing it against the LAZER Wasp in the loft.

also came away with questions about the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Some potential improvements on overshoes, tyre /glue questions…
