Team, how do you check your sealant level in your tyres? Do you set reminders for top offs, listen to the sound of slushing or how else do you check if a top up is necessary ?
I got a dipstick from MucOff which I like. Still learning the tubeless system so trying to check and top-off every 4mos or so
Look at the calendar and think “hmm, probably overdue to top up the sealant by now”, then crack the bead and find that I was right.
My previous reminder was a flat that wouldn’t seal, luckily it wasn’t while out riding.
I used to check using a dipstick that came with some Orange Seal sealants. But that requires a valve stem with removable core - this excludes valves like Fillmore - and the opening at the base of the valve stem wide enough for the dipstick to get through. You can use a zip tie for that purpose in place of a dipstick. Lately, I have just been giving the wheels a quick shake to hear the sound of sealant sloshing inside. I do also set up a reminder in the ProBikeGarage app to check add sealant after 3 months.
I try to do it on the first ride of every month
I haven’t been consistent with this, but I’ve tried using a kitchen scale to weigh the wheels without sealant and then with it. After a while, or if I think I might be low, I weigh it again. Because most of the weight is water, it should be good enough to tell if I’m low, and avoid typing up to often and having fast more than I need.
I got a bunch of pipe cleaners from Amazon and use one as a dipstick and something to clean out/unplug the valve of old dried sealant.
Same, I pop the bead off and have a look see.
I use the sealant for dummies rule:
If the tire will not hold the same pressure for a week it needs more sealant. This usually fixes my issue.
This is sensible but any advice for someone who’s running inserts (like huck norris) and doesn’t want to pop the bead but definitely wants to know exactly how likely a long walk home from the woods is? Pipe cleaners aren’t going to make it past the valve groove in the insert
if you have inserts, I am guessing the best way is to weigh the wheel, with the insert and tire, before adding sealant. Weigh it again after adding the proper amount of sealant.
If I could only go back and get a baseline weight! I guess it’s still saving time overall to reset the system once… Or, I could buy my way out of this and get an ultrasound probe? ![]()
Snipping of smooth end of zip tie works the same as MO dip stick.
I try to remember roughly when I last put sealant in, and if I’m unsure but think it’s been a while, and I’m doing a longer ride, I just throw a mini bottle of sealant (Stan’s 60ml bottle, emptied and filled with Orange Seal Endurance) in my pocket or pack and I’ve got insurance until I have time to break the bead.
I have 7 road and/or gravel wheel sets, so I kind of lose my mind trying to keep track of sealant, but after ~40,000 tubeless miles, I’ve never needed a ride home, so I guess my system is good enough.
I use a Park Tool TSI-1 Tubeless Sealant Injector. Pull out valve core , draw out sealant and reinject fresh sealant.
Takes about 10 mins , once a month for both wheels.
After so checking you’ll have an idea how often you need to do this for your areas temp. and humidity ![]()
I use a dipstick. Very fancy one - it is an old style stopper from Starbucks, the one that is kind of long and skinny. Valve core comes out, dip stick goes in.
