My first question to a South African local about Gravel Burn was "what type of tires should I be using?’
He told me that Vittoria T50’s and the like are a popular choice in the area. But something with more tread will obviously give better puncture resistance.
I’ve also been told that if you can put 50’s or wider in, then that’s a good idea as the roads can get quite rough. Suspension is even recommended.
Any locals out there with any insight on the terrain and best tires to use?

Hi, I rode the training camp last weekend and have also ridden a bit in the Graaf Reinet area recently. I would certainly put as big a tyre as possible and something with a good tread, especially in the front. The route will get rougher towards the second half and extra tyre cushioning will make things easier over the seven days. If you are not worried about outright speed, I would advise sacrificing some speed for comfort. I will be riding maxxis mountainbike tyres on a rigid titanium Curve

Thanks Reuben. Would you characterise the roads as generally smooth with some rough corrugations in places? Or rocky rough? And were there many double track roads with ruts and cracks?
Not that this changes much for me. I’m not gonna buy a whole new bike to fit MTB tires, but it’s nice to know what to expect!
Yeah generally smooth with some corrugations for the most part. But there will be some jeep track sections too I believe
Any thoughts on using inserts?
YES! I haven’t ridden without them in more than 2 years, they’re a life saver out here.

Thanks Benky,
I might have to visit the bike shop. Look forward to catching up.
I put liners in last wee and had a test ride over the weekend. Maybe it’s buyer placebo but definitely felt nicer. Allows for lower pressure as well
