Thread Together Press Fit Tool Advice

Hi all,

I have a Wheels Manufacturing 386EVO thread together BB. The flange to tigthen up the BB is the very narrow flange type. I have a the Park Tool BBT-29 and a generic cup type tool.

Having difficulty with either tool staying on the flange and not chewing up the teeth . I ended up laying the frame on it’s side to try and stop the socket tool slipping, this helped a bit but was wondering if there was an easier way/better tool ! Cheers

I know what you mean. Not a solution to the problem, but a way to minimize damage is to put a bit of cling wrap between the BB and tool. I think I learned that trick from a Dave Rome article.

I had tried the cling film (or thicker plastic wrap) with mixed result. If the tool fitment is sloppy due to low engagement, it won’t help much.

The generic Xin1 tools pictured tend to be rather low quality with sloppy fit. Bettee machined tools offer significantly better fit.

My ultimate go to when dealing with thin flanges often seen on internal t47, Colnagos etc. is to use a bearing press to keep the socket in place. Wood clamp works too - it can be a bit fiddly but it allows you to use any ratchet or breaker bar you wish.

I have a bearing press, I’ll give this a go. Super stuff.

I use a Park Tool BBT-RS, which applies spring tension to keep the tools engaged.

If you use the bearing press tools, just know that you’re essentially loosening or tightening against the press so you’ll have to provide enough tension to keep the tools from slipping, but not so much tension that it prevents the tools from tightening or loosening (if that makes any sense).
