Tapping threads / bosses into aluminum seatpost

Would it be possible to add threads or bottle bosses into an aluminum seatpost like a Thomson Elite, so that I could mount the new Cyclite saddle bag directly?

I have the skills and access to a metal shop with the needed equipment, I just don’t know if it would be safe to ride afterwards. I’m not worried about the load itself (<200g) but more about material stress.

I’ve built a steel frame and I pretty much added bosses wherever I wanted, but a frame is stressed in different ways to a seatpost.

Thanks!

I would assume this is a big no-no. I would expect you are creating “nucleation points” for fatigue cracks in a part that you know for sure will see relatively large and regular deflections. And seat post failure might mean your seat post might take a “core sample” from one of your most sensitive regions. Just thinking about this makes me shudder.

I’d just get a seat post with threads. Mine comes with threads for a bottle cage, although this is a D-shaped carbon seat post specific to my bike.

Thanks! I feared that might be the answer. I haven’t been able to find any options besides Canyon’s d-shaped post, but I’ll keep looking!

Into, no, for reasons outlined.

Onto, yes. It would be easy enough to fabricate a boss embedded in a carbon matrix and bond that to the post. Pressure moulded chopped strand CF (AKA forged carbon) would be strong enough for such as small load. Forged Carbon Fibre Development Starter Kit - Easy Composites

I would just get something like this

Band on bottle boss

Ooh yes, that looks interesting.

Plenty of options in that vein, and the Cyclite bag comes with some very minimal straps, but I would never.

This question reminds me of a scene in “The Hunt for Red October” when the Soviet attack boat captain asks his engineer if they can go to 110% power on the nuclear reactor. The appalled engineer says “possible yes but not recommended". Maybe just buy a frame bag instead - much easier than impaling yourself on a seatpost.

Hahaha exactly. It’s even worse though - the Cyclite bag is quite small and adds zero functionality to the VéloColour saddle bag I already have. I just saw it mounted on a Canyon seatpost with bosses at Cyclingworld and have been thinking about it ever since.

I know that seatposts with LEDs exist.

I know a guy who built that for hinself
