I haven’t worn my road helmet much since it’s been really cold this December. My last ride was on the 21st of Dec and it’s been on shelf since. Last Saturday was warm so I packed everything up and drove to a meet up but when I got there my helmet was loose. Turns out the plastic ratchet retention strap broke. Very strange since I only had my Garmin inside the helmet.
I’ve search online if there is a replacement part but I’ve come up empty handed. Is this something that can be fixed or is the helmet toast?
On my Scott helmet that thing has snapped twice already and I could both times get a replacement at at the local dealer/bikeshop. First time it was even free. I was pleased as the helmet is five years old already…
So maybe worth trying to find a dealer nearby?
Given that this is the Prevail II and the III has been out for ~3 years now, I’d just use this as the opportunity to buy a new helmet. It is about that time.
I’ve broken a few of the plastic dials on my specialized helmets (prevail and evade) they both use the same mindset that was linked above. Both times I’ve reached out to rider care and they’ve been able to order me a replacement. I’ve learned a few things along the way that may prove useful. 1. I had a habbit of spraying my neck with aerosol sunscreen with my helmet on, and apparently chemical sunscreens can cause the plastic to brittle. The other thing is when traveling with my helmet, I pull the mindset out from the height adjuster bit, and cinch the dial down to the smallest setting. This keeps any potential pressure from putting strain of the mindset
I had that happen on the same helmet. I took it to the LBS that sells Specialized to order a new retention system and two days later I had a new one at zero charge. That may be because the former Specialized Canada HQ is 5km away but that’s always been my experience with anything that has S-Works printed on it.
That kind of service may be why they closed that office.
