Hoping somebody can confirm whether or not the 12s road microspline freehub from the Shimano GRX 880 wheel is a direct swap into a Dura-Ace r9270 wheel? I’m guessing so, but I can’t find anything that would confirm. And I don’t really want to buy one only to find it won’t fit.
What I want to do is run a Shimano 10-45 cassette on my road bike (with a short cage XT derailleur).
The GRX wheels lists two free hubs, and the HG one doesn’t match the DA wheel free hub. All the other small parts are shared, except the drive side end cap is different between the two wheels. So it probably requires the GRX free hub and the GRX end cap. But who knows, given how many brake pads Shimano has that almost fit a certain caliper but not quite, I would say it is unlikely to work.
If you could have a job working at Shimano’s Dept of Incompatibility Engineering and get all the free product you could use, in addition to decent pay, would you? Knowing that you are contributing to incompatibility in the cycling industry.
My Shimano tech rep actually tried this on these wheels on my behalf and reported that it did not work. I think that they reported that the diameter of the axle on FH side was different, which would also track with the end caps being different.
