Great idea! That would work well for sure
Hunt seam to have changed their rim tape as the last few pairs Iāve received have been fitted with a black, no-logo, tape. Looks ok on the rim, Iād often see wrinkles and crinkles with their old tape at the end of the wrap.
Tape is called āBlackShieldā and Iāve a couple of rolls in to test. Have a wheel to tape so will report back on how it compares to the 3M, Tesa and Hunts previous tapes.
First impressions of the new Hunt tape are positive.
Goes onto the rim nicely and sticks well at the end/overlap.
edit - I did, notice this small part was not stuck. I pushed it down, it stuck nicely, and stayed that way when I dry tested, i.e. inflate and seat the tyre with no sealant, the tyre fitted nicely with the rim.
Hi Alex, I see thereās two versions of the Hunt tape. With and without printing. Iāll assume youāre using the later but any idea how they differ?
Iād agree I had a terrible time getting rid of Muck Off rim tape. I had to use nail varnish remover.
Iād recommend Schwalbe rim tape, Iāve recently used it on MTB and gravel rims and itās easy to apply and seals well. TUBELESS RIM TAPE | 32 mm | 887032
Really good marketing. And shops making good margins, willing to have their products up front.
Less-scrupulous shops twigged that Muc-Off ālubricantsā make them money twice, when customers return early to get prematurely worn drivetrains replaced.
Thatās it.
Hi Paul, I have both Hunt tapes. They feel quite different. The new, non-branded, tape feels a bit thicker and has a little more stretch to it. It also, as mentioned before, sticks to itself really well.
Iāve received new wheels from Hunt with the both types of tapes and the new one is finished much better, e.g. no crinkles or wrinkles (which Hunt said was due to shipping temperatures and humidity). They also donāt use the small piece of tape to cover the end/overlap with the new tape.
Iāll be ordering the new tape from now on, but Hunt in the UK only has limited stocks right now.
Thanks all! Following up a bit with a mini-review of a couple tapes and my US-based tape struggle.
I was unable to find 3M 8992 in the US in the right width (without ridiculously expensive order amounts). It did seem like the Viking tape US shop had it, but when I went to order the website threw an error, and when I emailed customer service, it bounced back as undeliverable. Between that and someone on reddit having a difficult time with it due to lack of stretch, I was ready to buy DT gold. That was also surprisingly hard to source in the right width in the US.
Unfortunately, my wheel that had started losing air more quickly recently (kicking off my tape search in the first place), actually seemed to āburpā the tape going off a medium drop at the bike park, then flatted (snake bite) off the next larger drop. I wanted to ride the next day, so I decided to make do with what I had on hand and order what I could for next day delivery.
The wheel I flatted was a Hunt, and the original rim tape had already been replaced by me with ZTTO tape I added to an order on a whim to try. The Hunt tape (original with branding) doesnāt seem to like summer heat very much. This wheel with Hunt tape lasted a month. The other 3 Hunt wheels are all still sorta lasting, but two have been āpatchedā with other tape. The ZTTO tape is ok. It sticks really well to the wheel and doesnāt seem to leave residue, but doesnāt stick that well to itself and bunches up around the valve hole.
After some thought and a couple failed attempts to patch the flat wheel with more ZTTO tape, I think I may have hit on a decent solution. I added a small patch of gorilla tape to the valve hole and covering the end of the tape. Since itās only touching other tape, I shouldnāt have a mess of residue to cleanup, and it seems to have stretched nicely when I poked the valve through instead of bunching. No issues holding air, peeling up when changing 1 tire, or out riding for few bigger rides now.
I also now have some WTB tape since it was available overnight (and cheap!). Not sure if itās as good as DT swiss, but I have some WTB rims a few years old now with no signs of tape delamination or wear, so hopefully itās decent.
Escape Collective member and 3D-printing meister Chris Heerschap still has three rolls - 32mm and 35mm - of the green poly tape left. I believe these are 3M 8992.
