At the coffee shop parkup yesterday I picked up a few other bikes (same model) and noticed that mine was feeling kinda heavy by comparison.
After some messing about with the scales I’ve realised that my multi-tool is quite hefty. More to the point, I’ve been carrying it for around 8 years and literally never used it. I rode without it this morning and was surprised to notice the difference.
So I’m keen to downsize and optmise. Ideally without spending a ton. Any suggestions?
Seconding that Spurcycle Tool too, especially if you don’t need fancy features like torque wrenches and so on. The pouch is also great to slip into a jersey back pocket without a second thought.
That said, I’m not sure how much weight you could technically save, by going with a lighter tool kit though. If you’re not the sort to ride alone often, you could be extra nice to the riding mates, and borrow THEIR tools in the offchance you need them (the tools). That should shave you 145g…
Or you could ride with 100ml less in your bottle and refill more often The cost of that tip would be a long black so we are talking AUD5. You are welcome!
The daysaver essential/coworker combo is pretty comprehensive. I’ve used it a couple of times to adjust things out in the real world and I quite like form of a hex key over a normal folding multi tool as well.
I like bit-based tools for general use and for their weight savings. I carry around the Prestarachet and life it enough that I’ve pulled it out at home for quick adjustments. Mini ratchets (from whichever brand is easiest for you to come by) are great. I’ve got an older version of this: Prestaratchet
I recently overhauled my long-ride repair kit to save weight. I was previously using a Silca seat pack, but noticed quite a difference in the way the bike felt when it was on vs off (especially when climbing out of the saddle). The kit included a multitool (Topeak PT30 @ 169g), a tube, tire lever, CO2 x 1 with attachment, mini hand pump, Dynaplug Racer.
Now I have swapped to something mounted lower down on the bike (Daysaver essential 8, Dynaplugs, tube/lever) and am carrying a portion in my jersey with my phone (Dynaplug Air and electric mini pump). There is a noticeable difference in the weight reduction on the bike (542g → 147g) and I don’t notice the 198g in my pocket. Overall weight savings was 197g.
For 90% of my flats (2-3/year) I am just using the Dynaplug Air, which is extremely fast/easy. The only thing I am missing now is a chain tool/spare link and am considering the Daysaver coworking 5.
Keeping with the ‘recommend what you have’ vibe… I have this for road and would buy another if I ever lost it. UK product, but International delivery available.
I’ve recently bought the Wera Tyre Lever Set W/ Hex Bits. Very small, compact and light, only thing missing is a chain breaker tool but not concerned about that anymore (unless I’m planning a VERY long ride).
I have the Daysaver Essential8 and it’s great, light, with excellent design. My one gripe is that dropping the nested bits in the field while changing them around can be super frustrating because they are tiny and near impossible to find in the grass. Ask me how I know.
YES, I look forward to hearing your thoughts, @jasedepuit !
I got the daysaver Essential 8 / coworking5 combo a year or more ago, and love it. I use it in my half frame bag for most rides, but am interested in how I could pare down my kit for road or light/fast training rides
I have become disenchanted with multitools–awkward and frequently missing that one hex that you need. So I am just getting the hex/torx that I actually need: lighter and more useful.
