I’ve been thinking about this, and I think the chainline issue from a single ring or GRX crankset being potentially a little further outboard is no issue at all.
- Single ring could be offset inwards, chainstay clearance allowing, putting the single ring either between the typical inner/outer ring position, or potentially right where the inner ring would normally sit (bear in min 42 inner ring is not unheard of on a double, so a single ring less than that is no issue when offset inwards).
- The whole point of this exersise would be to reduce the gear range, so time spend in the larger end of the cassette would be reduced (just one sprocket higher could negate the exagerated chain angle).
- I feel the small wattage loss of slightly exagerated cross chaining would be the least of the riders issues when pumping out crazy watts just to avoid coming to a standstill, and being in a better gear would more than offset the efficiency losses.
