In swapping stems to a 130mm length I now need more length in my brake hoses. So, I’m assuming using the rear hose as a the front (properly sized of course) and replacing the rear would be the way to go. I’ve seen lots of videos/explainers about shortening hoses but none on swapping to longer. It’s SRAM Force AXS D2. It’s on an Argon 18 krypton so the hoses route under the stem Appreciate any guidance/tips/tricks
Using the rear as the front would definitely be the most efficient as long as the hose is in good shape. Jury is out on reusing olive/barb at the caliper end to save time.
If routing is a challenge, there are double ended connectors you can use to pull the new hose through as you remove the old one:
Thanks Drew!
I thought the caliper end should never be cut and should use the factory installed barb and olive, according to SRAM (and Shimano)? So reusing the olive and barb was a must.
SRAM hoses have an olive/barb pre-installed when you buy a new hose, so just cut it off the lever end. If you want to avoid any sort of issues, you can swap the caliper along with the longer hose and then just use the front caliper on the rear with the factory olive/barb.
Quick tip to help with routing. Don’t bother buying any fancy routing tools. An old shift cable works a treat. Put two bends approx 50mm apart on the tail end and push this into your new hose, it will help with getting it past any weird corners you need to navigate. Barbs just screw into the hose so no need for any fancy tools for that part either
When you buy a SRAM hose kit, it comes with a length of hose (bare on both ends) and two sets of Thingamajigs. You make up one end, connect it to the caliper, run it through the frame or fork and cut the other end to length before putting on the other Thingamajig. If you have concerns about reusing fittings, you can cut the ends off your existing hose and reuse just the hose portion with new Thingamajigs.
