Lake 4-holes replacement

I have Lake CX402 Speedplay specific shoes that I love but they are getting old. It seems that they are discontinued so can’t just buy a new pair… I really like the moldable heel cups, feet are locked-up without thigtening too much.

Only options similar to Lakes I can find are Nimbls (price :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:) and Bonts (requires custom for Speedplay drilling, price :face_with_crossed_out_eyes::face_with_crossed_out_eyes:).

So I’m considering non-custom Bonts with the adapter, and hope that the lower Bont sole will compensate the extra height from the adapter (I don’t want to faff around with saddle height).

2 questions:

  • How do Bonts size vs Lakes ?
  • Is there an option I’m missing (available in continental Europe) ?

Thanks

The CX-403 comes in a 4 hole version: https://www.lakecycling.com/collections/road/products/cx-403-4-hole-cleat

Northwave. I think all their road shoes include the facility for their Speedplay adapter. I have a pair; the adapter works really well and reduces the stack height compared to the normal Speedplay setup.

The link is to Australian site, but all available in the EU.

Probably not much use, but ….. Lake 402 speedplay, but only in 39

Alternatively, it looks like the CX403 and CX333 are available in speedplay version, but maybe only as a custom order.

@Luke_Falk yes my message wasn’t clear. They were, but don’t seem available anymore… I’ve sent the question to Lake but no answer…

@Gregario Indeed forgot about that option

@JC1979 will try and see if custom still an option (if I can sell a kidney for custom Bonts I can probably afford custom Lakes ^^)

Wattshop (of Dan Bigham) has a service where he will redrill/convert any provided 3 hole road shoe for 4-hole Speedplay.

I have only used mtb shoes from Lake and Bont. If you like your foot held firmly, the Bont does that exceptionally well. I used their online guide to derive my Bont size from my Lake size, and it was accurate bordering on too small with thicker socks, but the ability to fine-tune the shaping of the tublike sole in the oven resolved any concern. The Bonts better serve my wide duck feet, and their engineering is retraining my terrible biomechanics to an astonishing degree, particularly in gravel riding. The Lakes, while comfortably wide, had too much volume otherwise, so I always had a little movement in the shoes. Good luck!

Got an answer from Lake, Speedplay sole still a thing but custom only with a €75 extra charge :scream:

@meow thanks will keep that in mind but sending shoes out of the EU and back makes it kind of last resort I guess :smiling_face_with_tear:

@slantedorbit thanks much informative, I checked the Bont size guide, and my Lake 45 is 46 - 46,5 with Bonts (where my non-cycling shoes are 44 or 45). Maybe I’ll get a non-custom pair of Bonts some day just to ensure of the correct size… Ordering a 46 shoe feels wildly unnatural
