The answer to me seems obvious but figured I would ask anyway. I’m running Vittoria Corsa tubeless. I’m starting to notice a lot of spots where there is pink bleeding through the gum wall. Which I assume to be the pink MucOff sealant starting to ooze through? Is this a sign of imminent tire failure or needing to go ahead and change the tire, or should the sealant…seal?
In my experience, both road and mountain tires begin to “weep” as they age. When you see damp spots on the tread (indicating sealant leaking through the tread), or beads of sealant on the sidewalls, it’s a good size the tire should be replaced.
However, I have not come to understand these signs as indicators that the tire is going to fail catastrophically, or anything like that.
With only a snapshot of information, it might be a little tricky to contribute further insight. But that said, where I am, in Singapore, we see quite a few tyres exhibit this issue, even relatively early during the use phase (< 500km). Some of the more common ones are Panaracer Gravelkings, which have been known to weep a fair bit, and consistently.
My guess is that it’s probably due to the alternating cycles of heating and cooling, as the tread contacts the hotter tarmac and gets cooled as it spins (and also while the bike is unused). Another contributor is also the composition of the tread material, which might make it more susceptible to temperature cycling.
If the mileage on your tyres are low-ish, you could try coating the tyres with a paintbrush while they’re off the bike. About 2 - 3 coats seem to do the trick for some tyres, in my experience, since the sealant is only penetrating through very minute cracks in the tyre.
I am with you here on doing a little pre-maintenance of coating the inside of the tire with a brush (foam works great), especially for cotton casings which are a tad more permeable. Would add to have a light heat gun to help bake it on if you dont have hours to wait for it to dry. Even with Contis and Pirellis (which are full vulcanized) I do this procedure, not due to a weeping situation in the sidewall problem but to create another film-breakpoint for when sharps come through the tire. I have found that the sealant (orange seal) will attach itself quicker to the already laid down latex Orange seal layer and seal up a puncture quickly compared to when I have not. Mind you-larger cuts and punctures still have their issues in the field, but having this added latex layer on the inside of the tire has worked out great for many knicks and pokes.
