Fun fact, when you’re roaming abroad the local operator will backhaul your traffic back to your home operator (for billing, filtering, etc): that’s why D+ just works.
Many consumer-level broadband routers can act as VPN servers, that’s what I do when I’m abroad: VPN back to my home. The traffic shows up as coming from a normal residential IP address.
I followed the same process to access on HBO Max in NL. I typically watch on my iPad but if I want to watch I my TV I connect an HDMI cable via an Apple dongle. I found I am also unable to stream wirelessly thru my Apple TV.
Yes, a bit of bastardry from Staylive - my subscription auto-renewed on 15th Feb for twelve months. I received the email you quote on the 16th Feb, so I logged on and cancelled my membership. BUT - no refund for this year! Can’t help but assume they deliberately didn’t tell me until after I had paid for another year. B@#*^&$s!
What previously worked for me was VPN connected to Germany on AppleTV and then just run Discovery+ as normal using my German account. Now it detects the VPN and when I turn the VPN OFF it detects the wrong region (Australia) and I can no longer play content. I was just about to try a German vps with its own public ip (just in case Discovery wasn’t happy with multiple connections from the same ip) but read in the thread that this is also no longer an option.
Useful info, many thanks! Assume when you mention routers acting as VPN servers, you mean this where you connect your router directly to the VPN service (rather than just the device)?
the router is physically in my home in the UK, connected to the local ISP
the router itself is the VPN server
When I’m abroad my phone/tablet/etc create a VPN tunnel to my router: from the point of view of e.g. Discovery+ the packets are coming from a device physically in the UK.
Or to put it differently: when aboard, instead of connecting to a 3rd party VPN service that carries my traffic to the UK, I connect to my own VPN server that serves the same purpose.
HBO Max in the US definitely does not get the same races as UK D+/Eurosport. The races are split between HBO, Flo, and Peacock. What will be interesting is if US HBO Max subscribers will be able to VPN to the UK to access HBO Max races in the UK. It works for service like Netflix where its the same app in multiple markets, but I’m not holding my breath on HBO considering the D+ VPN detector that’s in place.
Ok I worked out how to get around the AirPlay restriction. Install Nord app on AppleTv, connect the Apple TV to the same country as you iPhone/ipad vpn used to access Disco+ and airplay works again. It’s been a ripper week watching UAE, Andalusia, Algarve and the two French one-day races. Bring on Opening Weekend!!
One small thing that surprised me with Flo in Canada last year: the GP Quebec and Montreal are not offered. I found out after the races were over that those two were covered for free by CBC on the CBC Gem app.
I’m looking for an opening weekend solution for Australia. Luckily we’re pretty widely covered by SBS and can top up with Flobikes if needed. Except for this weekend.
I’m hoping I can find a mate in the UK to give me TNT login and I can VPN in which I think will be easiest. And I’m from the UK so I could pay a month using my UK bank account to pay. But 32 pounds seems a bit steep for one weekend and I might not even stay up for KBK.
Anyone have any luck using VPN to watch Sporza? I could probably live with the novelty of not understanding the commentary for one race but would appreciate instructions if anyone has them. Going through Apple TV is neatest, but for one race I’d be happy to just go through a laptop web browser and run to tv through an HDMI cable - fewer parts to go wrong!
Seems like Flobikes here in NZ doesn’t have any Flanders Classics, but I can’t seem to work out who DOES have the rights. Disclaimer, I need to check Joe’s article on a proper sized screen as I can’t use the table on my phone
I’m using Nord. It works fine? No complaints. I have it on my Apple TV, easy to login to Australia and turn on SBS. Once I got it setup (getting the SBS app on my US ATV was a little annoying) it works seamlessly.
