Guardian Bikes Request for Tariffs

I’m not sure where this post best fits, so if there’s a better place, please move this post.

I just read that Guardian Bikes is asking the US Government to add bikes to the 50% tariff on imported steel and aluminum. Apparently they claim that they’re building factory so that they can reshore their manufacturing. They further claim that the tariffs will help them compete against cheap imports.

Maybe I’m thinking about this all wrong, but it seems this would be the polar opposite of good for virtually every other company making bikes, making parts for bikes, etc in the US. Moreover, this would be a bg financial hit on custom builders.

Am I misunderstanding something about Guardian’s request and how it would affect the cycling industry in the US?

They aren’t concerned about every other company, just themselves. Which is fine….but I don’t think this move will work out the way they hope it will. Guardian still needs parts, materials and components from overseas.
