Hi all, I’m disassembling and going to reassemble a brake line on my sram force hydro brakes. Looking at the manual, they suggest using dot brake grease on the compression fitting. Is this necessary? I am getting mixed impressions based on internet research as some claim that it has the potential to gum the line if used. I am also trying to avoid another one time use item.
Why do we use Hydraulic Brake Grease?
Hydraulic Brake Grease, is a crucial component in the installation and maintenance of SRAM hydraulic disc brakes. This proprietary grease is specifically designed to lubricate brake seals in the levers, protect brake lines during barb installation, and provide the necessary lubrication for compression fittings and brake olives. The use of this grease is critical in ensuring correct brake installation, as failure to use it correctly can pose a significant risk of injury or even death.
On a sort of related note, can you guys recommend a nice hose cutter for hydraulic hoses? Is the Sram one any good? Im trying to remember if this topic has been mentioned in threaded
The Park Tool HBT-1 works well for me. Transitioned to this from the Jagwire Hydraulic hose cutter, which died within a few months of use (the plastic body failed under repeated use, since it’s form the rigid structure from which the blade cuts hoses).
The Park Tool one is great, since it’s also got the barb fitting tool on it as well.
I use the Knipex 90 20 285 hose cutter. Probably a bit too much for DIY / home use but is a great pair of cutters.
I do have a pair of Park Tool Zp-5 that my daughter borrowed and blunted, which I use because they are in easy reach, when cutting hose lengths off the reel. They give a decent cut as well.
The DOT grease is specified because it won’t break down when it comes in contact with DOT 5.1 fluid. The grease serves the same purpose as any normal grease on threads - to lubricate the threads so that proper torque can be achieved without overcoming additional friction and also to allow for easier disassembly. That said you could probably get away without using any grease at that fitting but it may make it harder to take apart later. Personally I went through the same thought process as you over a decade ago when I shortened my SRAM brake lines, went ahead and bought the DOT grease and now have used it many times on my personal bikes and am glad I have it. As a shop mechanic working on customer bikes I would always use DOT grease on SRAM compression fittings.
Dave Rome has written a few great articles on brake maintenance tools. He recommends the Jagwire Elite Hydraulic Hose Cutter and I’ve been very happy with it.
In most cases, I feel that the grease leftover from removal is sufficient and can be reused. For brand new parts with no factory grease, then grease is needed. I got some from the auto parts store. It’s a silicon based grease that is listed as compatible with all auto brake components.
This Ztto hose cutter and press works well, especially for a home mechanic who only needs it occasionally. I wouldn’t want it if I was using it every day as the cutter part has a tendency to swing open if you aren’t careful.
Anyone who says the manufacture recommended DOT grease “gums up the line” should probably not be relied on for information.
Use DOT grease. the SRAM one is pretty affordable to get a small tub that will last you a very long time.
MOLYKOTE 44 Light High Temperature Grease (silicone base, lithium thickener)
and Knipex 90 10 185 pipe cutter for multilayer and pneumatic hoses
I wouldn’t call it a one-time use item, but rather a one-time purchase item. If you ever build up another bike, or shorten your hoses, you may have to use it again and will be glad that you have it. And besides it’s hard to find anything for your bike that only costs $12 (and lasts a lifetime).
