I’m trying to convince some friends with road bikes to do gravelista in October. Most ride road bikes that’ll fit a 33mm tire. Would gravelista be enjoyable/doable on 33 gravel tires?
I would say no.
On the way out and back to the loops there are some pretty rocky sections. There are also some gnarly cattle grates. I’ve had a few mates crash on the course.
Personally I would say 40mm minimum.
There is the answer, no. It is “doable” with low speed and extreme caution, so definitely not enjoyable.
Mate who’s a good rider blew tire off the rim through one of the wetter /bigger stones section using 40mm ( on a Kev Ti ). Said would go 45 or 50 next time. Line choice hard in the wet.
Did Devils and had same feeling , it’s much more rough from what I understand. I have only done mtb in Derby.
WA has pea gravel with a sand base, harder base and some limestone stuff here and there. Occasionally mud so we have different conditions . Occasionally railway bluestone . Some champagne gravel too.
I’m from mtb so don’t mind the bigger stones just good to see line choice !
Agreed with those above about 40mm being the minimum - I’ve been the MC/commentator for the past couple of years and everyone I’ve spoken to who ran less than that wishes they hadn’t. I reckon 42-45mm is the sweet spot depending on your personal preference
