Goldilocks Aero Wheels - Hunt / Scribe / Other?

Having gone deep down the research rabbit hole I’m approaching the EC community.

I’m a UK rider drifting out of the crit scene and trying to make up my mind on a set of wheels. In the short term these are to upgrade my Stayer far-and-fast steel rig, but I may be lured back to an aero frame in future and would like to be future proofed.

I’m looking for a goldilocks set and I know my parameters, but I’m getting in to the fine-tooth stage and trying to parse the legit experience from the brand myths and superstitions.

My parameters are:
~£1k price point
~55-60mm depth
Likely running 28-35mm tyres depending on course.
Reliable, reachable customer service (hence tending towards UK brands)

Weight is an open question - I’m ~85kg, a sprinter in a past life, and my Stayer is never going to be a featherweight, so will chasing grams in the wheel set make a meaningful difference?

The obvious choices are

Scribe CoreSL+ 60
Hunt Aerodynamicist 54_58
Hunt Limitless 60 (summer sale pricing)

EC’s member discount with Hunt is a budget factor too!

Out-and-out speed is definitely a positive (my local club ride runs 35km/h+) but I want to be able to do long/ultra distance without fear of failure and lack of mechanical support.

There is so much guff, pro and con, around Hunts that I’m not sure who I believe that this point, and whether the notion of fragility and unreliability is more attributable to their older wheels.

I know my riding style, ability, and requirements, and that one wheel is never going to do it all perfectly, and that I could probably live with any of the three above. But let’s put it out there and see what the community thinks.

Ta!

I have two sets of hunt wheels and they’ve been great. When I had some cracked nipples within warranty on one of them hunt was very quick to send me new nipples and spokes and pay for my LBS to rebuild them.

I didn’t know there was an EC discount and that’s not good for me to know!

I have a set of the previous generation Scribe 60s. I like them (and they scored high on the cyclingnews aero test) and haven’t had any issues. The freehub is loud - would suggest getting a pot of the grease and lubing them up. Sadly they don’t do the green hubs anymore, it seems.

The only “issue” I have is that they feel a bit squirrely once you get up above about 30mph. I swapped the front for a 50 and that has largely eliminated the issue. I still use the front 60 for TTs but not general riding. I don’t know if that’s an issue with those wheels in general or any deeper wheels.

I’d be tempted to add Reserve wheels to the list. At full price they’re probably unremarkable, but often available at significant discount through Merlin or Wheelbase, in which case they seem like a solid choice.

My pick of the bunch from what’s currently in stock and fits your criteria would be the 53|65 with DT Swiss 350 hubs, on sale at Merlin for just over £1,000.

I’ve got Hunt aerodynamicists and unlimited, though smaller–32 and 48. Very happy with each, got both before EC discount but at good sale pricing. I run them tubeless, punchy tarmac, and they handle well. Unlimited do very well in crosswinds. My only knock is matter if taste, godawful freewheeling noise. My A bike has Campy Bora, whisper quiet, but probably about twice the $ of Hunt.
