Gels with high carbs

You can use glucose powder instead of malto, which makes it easier to mix…..more expensive than malto, but still way cheaper than store-bought gels.

hmm, I might try that. Wouldn’t it be much sweeter? The fructose is already pretty sweet so I like that the malto kinda dulls it a bit. In the end it’s only like an extra minute or two of stirring so it’s not a big deal

I have never tried using malto, so I can’t say….but at a 2:1 ratio of glucose: fructose, I don’t find the mix too sweet at all, especially compared to pre-mixed stuff. Adding a healthy pinch of pink sea salt also cuts down on the sweetness.

I’ve messed around with a lot of carb recipes but I’ve come back to plain old table sugar. It’s way easier and cheaper. I either mix in an espresso for morning ride or some yellow gatroade powder for flavour.

It’s quite sweet but I got used to it. Rule #5, HTFU (my sweet tooth in this case).

I have a couple of these and they’re great. Caster sugar + an electrolyte tab for flavour/fizz is my ‘recipe’.

I make my own drink mix, use Carbs Fuel gels, and occasionally make my own gels in a couple GU soft flasks I bought off Amazon. The “gel” mix is just water, 2:1 maltodextrin:fructose, usually 40g:20g, a pinch of salt, and usually a packet of TrueLime or TrueGrapefruit for flavor. I use those same packets to flavor my drink mix. I add electrolytes to my drink mix as well, how much depends on the season.

ETA that I sometimes use that “gel” mix to refill my drink mix bottles on long rides too. That’s just a personal preference thing.

I’ll echo that the Strykr gels are a bit weird tasting. However the 50g bars are great. The carbs gels at 50g per are great bang for the buck and neutral tasting. Also a big fan of the Amacx turbo gels with 40g.

For mixing your own high carb I would not use table sugar and fructose. It’s very sweet. Using malto cuts the sweetness a bit. Plus the point of the ratio in high carb drinks is to use a more complex carb source (malto) and a simpler one (fructose) to prevent stomach issues and it affects uptake rates.

Absolutely. Maurten has changed everything for me. Drink mix in one bottle, water in the other, a gel or two and some real food can work all day, and my sensitive gut is even happy.

My god, Maurten is expensive though!
