Garmin 850/550

DC Rainmaker review

It’s a nice screen but the price increase is pretty hard to justify. I was looking to upgrade my old 530 but may end up sticking with it for some time.

The battery life doesn’t bother me too much but would have liked to see closer to 15-16hrs at least.

The price for the 850 is a big jump, a really big jump, over the 840.

If you’re in the market for a new head unit, better grab the 840 while you can

I was waiting for x50 as my 1040 seems lagging a lot recently, like the CPU could not cope with the load anymore. But the price and battery life are disappointments.

Good reminder to periodically just dump all the activites/routes off of it. Harder now with MTP protocol on Macs but mine is snappy again. h/t Gpllama

I am cleaning the activities regularly, but I keep the routes as I am using them. Maybe the culprits are the IQ fields I am using (WindField and MapDashboard). I have noticed a “sudden” (means I have noticed it only recently) drop in battery life to somewhere like 15-17hrs. It used to be almost double.

+1 on the 530 camp.

I love the device and have been waiting for something to come along that would make me upgrade.

I’ll probably hold out longer!

If you read some of the reviews they say the main battery culprit on the 550/850 is the dynamic screen brightness. If you lock it at, say, 30 percent (which seems to be the equivalent of max brightness on the v3 Wahoo units) the battery life increases. And it’s possible that software updates can eke out more battery life over time.

If anything, the lower battery life opens the door to another player in the GPS world - Coros, perhaps? Maybe iGPSPORT? Time will tell.

Yes, the price is steep. Will it turn folks off? Possibly.

That said: I ordered a new 1040 yesterday when ExpertVoice had a flash sale on it. I don’t need the x50 features. I have an 840 that does well but I like the increased battery life and screen real estate of the 1040 for longer trips. I have a 1030 Plus but it is now showing its age (and I despise the micro USB charge port).

Yes, it’s a pain. I use the Android File Transfer app. It works alright. It definitely works better than when I used years ago to transfer files from a Wahoo Bolt v1.0 to my Mac.
