I have a Bontrager dual charger floor pump which has served me very well, however the pump head is on it’s last legs and has all but given up locking onto Schrader valves on the kids bikes and bike trailers, and is getting quite leaky on presta valves on my bikes.
I also struggle with the pump head as it barely fits in the wheel of the kids 12" and 14" bikes with the lever flipped up, so even if I could find a like for like replacement (which I don’t think I can), I would prefer to try and find a pump head which is more compact for this purpose.
So please EC community, recommend me a pump head that works for Schrader and Presta valves, is compact, and ideally can be fitted to the hose on my dual charger floor pump.
Likely not the answer you want to hear, but If this was my garage I would now do the jump to clik valve (conversion of presta valves, adapter onto schrader valves).
Like xof said, a much more involved change (because you have to change all valves to Clik) but it would solve your solution as that head is as small as it gets.
I’m the proud owner of the much-lauded Prestacycle Pro Presta Head. Great idea, but the execution falls short. Had one warranty claim – honestly, neither head was worth keeping. Leaky and not worth the €40, IMO. Swapped to Clik valves and zero regrets.
The specialized pump head, I think “switch hitter”? . I’m on my third head in 20 years or so of frequent use on the same Specialized floor pump. Admittedly, getting it on all the way is still a tight fit on 12" kids bikes, but in general for everything else, the ability for it to do both Schrader and presta (very well, IMO) is the reason I have kept with it. With my own fleet of presta bikes, plus the kids Schrader bikes, trailers, ball inflator needles, etc - having one pump that does them all without fuss is the way to go.
At one point i considered getting a really nice Silca pump for my presta stuff but figured it wasn’t worth the hassle of having two pumps, esp when I don’t have any complaints with the specialized - I like the pump and head enough that I even went through the trouble over overhauling it and replacing the worn out dial gauge with a digital one from Amazon.
I genuinely don’t even understand why clik valves are a popular thing because I never have to fight any of my own valves, no blow-offs , can still one hand the pump head etc.
I have had good luck with the thread on Lezyne head. Others complain that it may unscrew the presta valve. I have not experienced this (I make sure the removable presta valve is screwed in securely). You can flip the red piece over to use on both presta and schraeder valves. It is listed with the braided hose on the website but you may be able to find just the head. With the amount of negative comments on them, maybe you can find someone looking to get rid of one for cheap.
Clik is a minor convenience in the garage, but probably not worth the expense of swapping. Where it really shines is if you change your pressure during rides (or flat a lot I guess), being able to get a mini pump on and off easily without losing pressure is fantastic.
