Dynamo light delay when turned on

Hi all,

So yesterday I had a slightly unexpected behaviour from our dynamo front light and I’m not sure if it’s normal, so I’m looking for other’s experiences.

We were riding along charging stuff with our steerer-mounted USB charger (setup detailed below). It got dark. So while riding along, I unplugged the USB from the charger and then flipped the switch on our Edelux front dynamo light. The rear light came on immediately but nothing happened with the front! I was a bit concerned. But then about 10-15s later it came on to full brightness and then behaved normally the rest of the ride. I.e it would come on immediately after we stopped. Would do the usual flickering at low speed etc.

Is this normal?

Setup:

SON28 Dynamo hub

Edelux ii front light

SON rear dynamo light connected to the under-port on the Edelux.

Sinewave Reactor steerer-mounted USB charger

The charger and light are wired in parallel.

I know that light has a standlight feature, and I wonder if it was waiting for the battery to buffer before the light came on.

Likely a capacitor, rather than a battery, but yes, this sounds possible. Bit odd, as the electronics should allow the capacitor to trickle charge when the light is on (hence why in my experience the stand function doesn’t normally work if only been moving briefly), but I’ve not had experience of the Edelux light.
