Who’s signed up for Defector? I don’t really do the ball sports, and don’t need another source for political news unless the analysis is deeply unhinged and interesting - something I can’t get from NYT or WaPo. I really do hate me some subscription shit but Patrick seems cool enough.
I’ve enjoyed Patrick’s contributions to the Tour daily pod. I’m also not a big ball sport fan, but decided to sign up at the discounted rate. At just under $5 a month, I’m willing to give the Defector team a chance and support independent journalism. I’ve enjoyed reading the TdF articles and came across the following today, “Orcas Are Kerploding Sunfish Into A Thousand Pieces” which seemed like a title for a story that Iain would write. If I get a couple of stories a week that are of interest, then it will be worth it. As much as I enjoy Joshua Robinson and his alter ego, Rosh Jobinson, I cannot justify the WSJ subscription cost just to read his articles. I also subscribe to the NYT, but did not renew my WaPo subscription back in May. I look at subscriptions as the cost of high quality media content.
I am more reluctant to purchase software subscriptions even though I recognize there are ongoing development / server hosting costs as I would rather pay upfront for a piece of software and then decide later if the added features is worth buying a new version. The change in payment model is why I no longer use Lightroom.
