If they weren’t dressed head to toe in performance gear and riding bikes that are clearly designed for performance, I might believe that take.
Cigarettes are unfortunately still seen as ‘cool’ in many parts of the world, helped I’m sure in no small part by the fact that big tobacco are still funding mass marketing in many countries. For some reason, it seems the performance cyclist look and smoking ‘coolness’ have collided in some strange way.
Why the algorithms are suddenly feeding this rubbish to you @wade_wallace is likely a slightly different question. Maybe you inadvertently or inquisitively clicked on one and the algorithm jumped on that? Or maybe someone you follow or the algorithm knows you know clicked on one, or even worse, ‘liked’ one of them, and so the algorithm started feeding that content to you and others too.
I think this is exactly how the algorithm might work - you have paused, zoomed in etc on that first one that appeared in your feed, which had the algo send you more like it. Even not instantly scrolling past is enough of a signal. By the time you linked and shared all of those images the algo is assuming you’re fully into these.
Yes, interaction is interaction as far as the algorithm is concerned. In a fit of pique I recently reported a cigarette advertisement on YouTube which only resulted in an infuriating response from YouTube and a quadrupling of the frequency of the cigarette ad in my feed.
