For spring and autumn, Defeet Wooleater
For winter, Defeet Woolier Boolie
For summer, strictly whatever looks cool
Feetures. Can’t beat the lifetime warranty.
Silca Aero socks for race day.
I was really inspired by the interview @wade_wallace did with DeFeet founder and while back… I realized that the only pair of well aged cycling socks I owned without holes in the toe were a pair of DeFeet Aireator in the Honey Badgers theme… I asked for more for Christmas and haven’t looked back.
I use a variety of Darn Tough hiking or light cushion socks in the winter if needed. You CANNOT kill them usually, and if I do, I end up feeling like I got more than my money’s worth, and not pursuing the money back guarantee

Ornot socks (with EC member discount!)
7mesh (also with member discount)
Feetures are excellent and have a lot of cool designs.
Silca aero are also great, although I wish they would bring back the shorter version.
Both of these socks are also very comfortable for running (yeah, mea culpa, I do triathlons sometimes).
Fingerscrossed (most models, expecially the light aero and the regular ones)
#1 Defeet are the only cycling specific sock brand that even make socks large enough to fit me (UK size 14). Their socks are fine and all I wear in summer.
#2 For winter or just general use (I wear them 100% of the time really) I tend to wear wool Darn Tough socks in various weights to fix the conditions. Goto for winter are Coolmax Hiker micro crew midweight hiking socks. Colours are OK (they could do with more simple solid colours), they’re warm and last forever, and work great in normal cycling shoes under shoe covers.
#3 I have a couple of pairs of Trek socks that just fit, and one pair of Specialized wool socks in my size. Availability seems patchy.
I’ve tried tons of socks over the years. Defeet for the win since Defeet socks seem to beat everyone out for both being durable and comfortable. Swiftwick socks are nice, but they always get a hole in the toe or heel for me, well before (I think) they should.
Cafe du Cycliste tube socks
Endura jagged socks
Fingers Crossed are amazing. They originally started out as cycling socks only (have now branched into all accessories and most recently full kit). They cover every area of socks, high summer, normal, mid weight, deep winter, off road and aero (two types). Great designs, super fabrics and excellent fit. Don’t think you ever need to buy socks from anyone else.
Spring/Summer/Fall: Rapha Brevet Sock. Nice colors with subtle visibility features.
Winter: Rapha Winter Pro Team socks or Darn Tough wool hiking socks.
+1 for DarnTough wool socks. They offer a massive number of heights, thicknesses, etc. I find the ultra-lightweight microcrew model the right thickness for cycling (and nordic skiing). Your preferences may vary. They’re US made, and best of all have legendary no-catch lifetime guarantee – if wear through them, just mail them back for a fresh pair.
Another vote for Silca aero. Always super comfortable, seem to be holding up very well with no visible wear after near weekly use for a year. Stay up with no adjustments all day. My neon pink is just as bright as ever. @joshpoertner if you’re listening - PLEASE MAKE A NEON PURPLE
Silca Aero are also a go-to for me, and I echo the wish that they’d bring back the shorter version. For racing, I’ve been using Sockeloen’s aero socks, which have better grippers than my Rule28s.
I’ve been wearing the thin Smartwool socks for years. They last. In winter, I’ll add a sock layer and various forms of shoe covers.
I’ve been waiting for this one!
Generally, I’ve been disappointed by cycling socks. You pay just as much as for hiking/running socks (e.g. Stance) and I feel like you get less functionality.
I have been relatively happy with the basic Santini high socks. Not too expensive, mix-and-match colors. Soft and comfy fabric, also good to use them as sneaker socks (ankle socks are apparently a no-no nowadays
).
Also got some merino socks from Tactic in Girona. I feel like they’ve worn out less than other merino socks I’ve had.
Otherwise, mostly underwhelmed by cycling socks!
Swiftwick is king. It seems their built for comfort and squeeze the foot in the right place, there’s a light version, warmer version, and warmest version, and they’re also my favorite white sock.
But where can I buy it in Belgium/Europe?
I just wish Swiftwick had fun socks. They used to have a bunch but now they’re pretty boring
Humphrey Law Cycling sock style 27b. Merino outer, cooolmax inner short socks which I stumbled on in a local store. I bought them for a winter ride on the BVRT and haven’t used any other socks since.
