Cassette lockring spacer or washer?

Recently a customer brought in an ebike with a Deore 10-speed cassette. I noticed the cassette was loose - just a little play - and torqued it. Still loose.

I found the lockring was missing the thin washer-spacer. Found one off another lockring and hey presto - snugs up to 40Nm now and doesn’t budge.

So there seems to be a lot of misinformation about these washers-spacers. Some cassettes have them, some apparently don’t. People think if the lockring is steel or alloy it dictates.

@Dave_Rome I suggest this is a good one for Geek Warning

Thanks Mike.

Very interesting. I suspect in this case the tolerance stack of the cassette in relation to the length of the freehub body was just enough that the washer was needed.

I’ll see if Shimano has any information about this.

Just had the exact same thing happen with a SRAM cassette a customer had added themselves to a YT frankenbike. Noisy while pedaling, a smidge of movement, now sorted with the Shimano spacer.
