Cabot Ride the Ridges

Just finished one of my favorite annual events, Cabot Ride the Ridges in Cabot, VT. I’ve done it for several years. It is the polar opposite of Big Gravel. Small event, small town, all proceeds to local charity, no timing, all volunteer, beautiful hilly courses. Home | Cabot Ride the Ridges

The RWGPS 100k map shows the maximum gradient as 12.9% Don’t believe it. Maple syrup shots and pickles – a classic VT combo - are usually available at the feed stations to help you up the hills.

It’s not a day for staring at your numbers and worrying about performance. It’s a day to look around and smile.

That looks great! How does it compare in terms of difficulty with D2R2?

I’ve never ridden D2R2. By the numbers the 100k routes look similar. The Cabot route is a very Vermont mix of mostly well-maintained dirt roads with a bit of pavement, rail trail, Class 4(unmaintained road) and doubletrack mixed in. Gradients up to 18% or maybe more. It shares some roads with the Peacham Fall Fondo.

I think RWGPS is conservative with the elevation number – I recorded 7,500’ when I rode the full 100k route, and that’s what I get if I export the .gpx to Strava or Garmin.

I keep going back because the routes are beautiful and the event has such a friendly, relaxed feel.
