Broken dynamo connectors

I have a recurring problem with broken dynamo connectors. I find them quite tight to disconnect and clearly I’m doing something wrong because I’ve now broken two in the span of a few months, without using them that often.

It’s not a terribly hard fix but I would prefer to avoid more fiddly splicing. Any tips? I’m open to different connectors too if there are better ones out there.

Thanks in advance!

I don’t recognise your one. I used the son coaxial one for the front wheel connection. Had it for years and works well.

what brand of dynamo are you using? how do the pieces pictured fit together with the hub?

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies and apologies for my delayed response and the missing info up front.

I’m using a SON hub dyno with a Purple Dog front light and a Supernova rear light. Many varieties of connectors being used in the system but these are for the connection at the front light for the hub > light and remote > light.

The connector itself is used by Supernova (and some other light manufacturers like Purple Dog) and in e-bike applications. Here’s a cable with the same connector from Supernova. They also use the same for their remote (which I have).

It’s basically a slim waterproof coaxial connector with a very tight fit. I could splice in different connectors but they’d need to be a similarly slim profile to fit with my routing.

Thanks!

I think what you want is banana plugs or bullet connectors, here are Supernova’s version. They should not be a very tight fit. The banana plugs do require soldering and when used with heat shrink tubing and dielectric grease should give a good water-resistant connection. I recommend getting a few extra and practicing your soldering technique a few times if your aren’t a regular solder user.

I am a huge fan of the Dyna-Snap connectors. The only downside is that you really need to have the proper crimper to install them. But then they connect magnetically, so it’s super easy to remove and reinstall the front wheel. I’ve used them on a bunch of bikes over the years.

Thanks both for the product suggestions! I have the banana plugs inside my frame to get to the rear light, they’re a bit ugly but I suppose I could overcome that :joy:.

The magnetic connectors look super slick but unfortunately much to large for my routing.

I was hoping to find another coaxial connector so I didn’t have to split out two tiny wires (they’re 24 gauge or so).
