I would like to encourage everyone who is planning bike tours on a PC or mobile device to give Bikerouter a shot.
The current main developer (Marcus Jaschke / https://en.osm.town/@bikerouter) has been pushing so many improvements recently, that it’s now really cool IMO.
It needs a bit of tinkering and learning at first. Be sure to check out the “about” information with links to documentation etc (menu top left).
I’ve been using it intensively on our holiday in southern France and been so happy that I just deleted my Komoot.
Main advantages IMO:
- really fast
- highly customizable
- open source & privacy friendly /no ads, no nagging pop-ups
Disadvantages
- all browser based, no app (for offline usage, I download the gpx and use it with offline-apps such as CoMaps on Android or MapOut on iOS). Mobile usage creates very little data-traffic, I find.
- currently only one active developer (he is taking donations to run/scale up servers)
- main support channel is a german mtb-forum. Very helpful folks there, I assume you will get answers even if you ask in English.
