Batteries with bitter coating still an issue?

I went to buy some new CR2032 batteries for my Quarq power meter, but all I could find were the ones with the bitter coating. I thought those caused issues with power meters and you were not supposed to used them. Is that no longer a thing, and is it fine to use batteries with the coating? Any brand is preferred? Mine seem to last only 6m.

Yes, this can be an issue with power meters, HRMs, speed sensors.

The easiest way around this, I have found, is to clean the coating off with Iso alcohol.

Rub them well, pay attention to the edge. This is the + connection area on most devices.

What is the potential issue with the costing? Corrosion? Poor connection?

They are definitely a problem with Apple AirTags, as @Hans_Hagman says anything using the edge is likely to be a problem due to poor connection. Duracell have been unusable for me, and I didn’t manage to clean them well enough to work. I have had no problem with Energizer but I don’t know if they exist outside the UK.

Duracell won’t work in AXS shifters, Energizer does. Why would you produce a battery that can’t power a device is beyond me.

Okay, thank you all. I went to the grocery store, CVS and Walgreens and all they had were the ones with the bitter coating. I found some on Amazon without, but I’ll try the alcohol next time, as it looks like the uncoated ones are getting harder to find.

Maxell seem to work fine. They also don’t come in that annoying packaging…

I didn’t realise this was an issue - thanks for the information. It might explain why my Stages PM has been playing up.

I got uncoated Industrial Energizer 2032’s from Grainger a few weeks ago. Their Industrial line does not have the coating but sourcing them isn’t as straightforward as the normal ones.

I guess Duracell think it’s better to have some issues getting them to power an item rather than this - NHS England » Patient safety alert – risk of death and serious harm from delays in recognising and treating ingestion of button batteries

Maybe it’s cheap engineering to use the fix they have, but if it’s effective they will keep with it.
