Axle-mounted rack with kid-trailer compatibility - any alternative to Old Man Mountain?

Hi,

my wife and I started taking our son on rides in his trailer and since the riding is a lot easier / heavier for one person at a time we want to get to hitches so we can switch it up on the road so one person doesn’t get bored.

Ideally, both would then have a rack for pannier bags in case we want to carry some things and not put everything in the trailer and in that way we can just switch it around without any wrenching on the road.

However, I’m using carbon bikes without eyelets (Trek Procaliber, Ibis Hakka) for this. Therefore, I would need to get a thru-axle mounted rack. I have found that Old Man Mountain have a neat little adapter that lets you attach a kid trailer hitch at the same time, which means no switching around of axles and hitches for the two of us. However, I don’t like that their fit kits are quite expensive (it’s an additional 70€ per bike I want to use) and the Divide Rack (which is needed for panniers) is also quite heavy at 960g.

Does anyone know if there there are any other brands, that do the same?

I see that Ortlieb market their Thru-Axle adapterfor the quick rack (of which we already have two) as also usable for trailers (or at least it seems like they used to), but I’m unsure if both work at the same time. The new Topeak Zi:Rak also looks neat, however from how it assembles I’m pretty sure this won’t work with a hitch. I’m pretty sure nothing like this exists for Tailfin.

My guess is since you’re talking through axles that both (all) bikes you’re using have rear disc brakes. Otherwise, the Classic Burley hitch (which fits in the left rear triangle of the frame) is/was perfect for your scenario with no extra tools or mounts needed.
