Avid Elixir Discs/Levers

I’ve have Avid Elixir discs/levers on my MTB since new (2014?). They’ve been decent, minus a hiccup or two. I had the LBS replace the pads and DOT fluid a while back and finally took the bike out the other day. It was hot - 90+ - and halfway around the pads started dragging. This has happened in the past and I understand it’s a ‘thing’ with this brakeset.

My question is, can I replace the levers and fix the problem from coming up again? Or should I just bite the bullet and go with a new or decent used brakeset?

Shimano’s entry level MT200s will work 1000x better than an 11 year old set of DOT based brakes, especially Avids. In my experience, if the brakes have sat for a long time with the pistons extended, they very rarely want to retract all the way into the bore due to the corrosive nature of DOT fluid. This ends up resulting in less pad clearance with new pads.
