Augmented sound effects during racing broadcast

Not sure if correct category….

Once heard, I’m now unable to unhear repeated crowd noise augmentation during race broadcasts. First noticed during a broadcast last year when a particular ‘crowd cheer’ audio clip was repeating every couple minutes or so during a multi stage (fairly sure it wasn’t a 1 day) race broadcast on TNT or EuroSport. May have been sometime between the Tour and Vuelta. I think it’s safe to assume the ‘chop chop’ from helicopters are often augmented, but does anybody have inside info on the hows and whys? Web searches fail…figured I’d ask here.

The fake helicopter noise has become a meme with its own Twitter account, and I like to think the production team are in on the joke when they’re dubbing in the cries of a hawk we can somehow hear over the heli, and the chimes of a bell tower as the clock hits 17 minutes past 3.

There are real ambient mikes out there on motos, I used to choose the ambient feed when Eurosport offered this as an option to listen to Carlton Kirby.

It’s all a bit cringe naff and amateurish hence fits perfectly with cycling.
