Is anyone riding 35mm Conti GP5000S TRs? Is anyone riding them with 25mm internal width rims? Thoughts? How wide do the measure when inflated on your wheels?
Not quite the answer you’re after obviously, but given how new the 35mm S TR is you might not get much direct experience.
Nevertheless - until recently I was running 35mm GP5000 AS TR on 24mm internal rims as road wheels on a Crux, which measured up at around 37mm. They ran beautifully.
That’s a good data point. What size tires did you run before the AS TR’s on those rims, and how wide did those tires measure?
Prior to that was 30mm S TR which pretty reliably come up around 32mm on the 24mm rim.
I’m keen to get my hands on some. I have the Hunt 40 Limitless wheels and have been loving them with Specialized Mondo 35mm tires, but I can definitely tell they slow me down. But I like the versatility of terrain I can ride on.
I’ve found that the ASTRs, durable as they are, feels a little “deader” than the S TR of equivalent width. Curious if that was something that you might have felt as well?
Yeah for sure, a bit more rubber, a bit less supple. But they’re still a fantastic tyre, fast and confident in their own right and the S TR wasn’t available in 35mm at the time so it was kind of a moot point!
Thanks for that @Andrew_Leitch. Was keen to see if it was just me. Wholly agree that they’re great tyres, really sturdy, though I did puncture one with a loud pop, running over some shrapnel. Got to see first hand how thick that tread actually was!
Same exact experience as @Andrew_Leitch with 35mm AS TR on Reserve 40|44 Rims (Front 25.5mm, Rear 25mm internal widths) measuring 37mm
Perfect! I have Reserve 40/44 wheels.
not to hijack but are you running those rims on the newer Aspero-5? Any insights if you are?
I’m running my 40/44’s on a custom steel frame. It’s worth noting that the version of the 40/44 I’m running and also, I think, that @Chris_Blackstone seems to be running is an older version and not the current 40/44 GRs. The 40/44 GRs have a larger internal width.
On my Enve 4.5 which are 25mm internals they measure up at 36.8mm. This is proper Paris Roubaix spec!
Bicycle Rolling Resistance Dot Com just released the results of their tests of the 35mm Conti GP5000S TR, and the results are mighty impressive and significantly better than the results of their testing of the 35mm GP5000 AS TR.
I was concerned about it being a slow tire. It’s not like I’m looking for marginal gains, but I do want a tire that rolls like the more narrow GP5000s. I love how tires in that range seem to roll. It looks like they’ll closely match the 30mm GP5000S TRs I’m riding right now.
