10 Speed Shimano Chain Choice: MTB or Road for MTB Cassette

Hello,

I’m putting a 10 Speed XTR cassette on my 2X road bike for lower gearing. Shimano make a chain for MTB and for Road; and, the text provided at the retailer says to use a “mountain bike XT” chain with this cassette. I have an unused 10 speed Ultegra chain in my parts bins.

Question: will using a road specific chain with two chainrings and a MTB cassette negatively effect the shifting? As a Campy Guy for decades, this kind of road vs. mtb specificity remains new to me. Conversely, will the XT chain have any issues with a 50/34 chainset?

I reckon both chains willl work, but I await your Collective expertise!

Thanks!

The Ultegra chain will work great. We have used them interchangeably at our shop with no issues. I remember asking Shimano tech that question and was told that they are designed to be used based on the front crankset. But they also said that the vast majority of riders wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two.

Just covering bases here, but have you checked that the rear derailleur has sufficient range to cover the largest cog on that cassette? Otherwise, you might end up with a really tight chain and an over extended derailleur, or a really loose chain in the small-small configuration.

Thanks Vern, this is good to know. I’ve two 10 speed MTBs that are 2X, but SRAM. So, this bit of info helps a lot.

Not Fast….yes, the rear derailleur is a long cage Campagnolo Record (as is the rest of the drivetrain) using a Wolf Tooth road link to keep the jockey wheel of the teeth. There’s a JTEK shiftmate inbound to coordinate the Ergo shifters with the Shimano cassette, where previoiusly I had down tube friction shifters with an 11 speed Campagnolo cassette.

New wheelset has a Shimano Freehub, hence the shift (ahem) to Ergo and a cassette with more range. Branford Bikes reckons this derailleur and crankset option can handle a 40 in the back…which will be perfect for when I throw some light touring bags on this rig.

An important and correct question that you’ve asked, NFETKU. Thanks for the attention.

I currently have a Voodoo Juju set up with 53/36 in the front and an 11-34 in the back and it’s either for me so far, with panniers bringing the total up to circa 20kg.

The other half has a similar setup, albeit with 48/31 and 11-40 on a road link.

Everything’s peachy except for long-ish 15%+ inclines.
