Hi everyone. I’m considering upgrading from SRAM Force D1 to the E1 shifters for the universally praised improvement in braking performance (I ride up and down decent-sized hills regularly).

I’m wondering if I really need to replace the Force D1 brake calipers or can I just upgrade the levers?

I read a post from April where someone was asking about the ergonomic difference between D1 and E1, and a few people said they had done what I’m proposing successfully in that thread, I guess I’m just hoping for more validation before I spend a chunk of change to do this.

Thanks

I only upgraded from Force D1 to Red E1 shifters. I kept the Force D1 brake calipers. The difference in braking performance - on top of the improved ergonomics in which I can do one-finger braking without the brake lever hitting my other fingers - is night and day.

I believe the additional benefit of the E1 calipers is that the pistons open slightly wider than on the D1/D2s for greater rotor clearance.
