I’m not getting contamination vibes but I am getting FOD vibes. While that rotor doesn’t look contaminated I’m seeing some significant scoring and uneven contact. It appears continuous around the rotor and matches what the pads look like so definitely something got imbedded in the pads and scraped things up. Personally, I’m not a fan of sanding rotors - I think it’s a waste of time and can sometimes make things worse - but that doesn’t seem to be the issue here.

New pads, rotor, and a good bed-in will definitely be the best bet at this point just for a full reset and you can pinpoint the cause if noises come back.

Again, thanks all for the continued tips and ideas on this.

@Changren_Yong I had some Silca drivetrain cleaner so I tried it this weekend. It made a significant difference, and I was hopeful, but ultimately after a ride this morning the noise is still there.

@Michael_LoFaso thanks for lots of ideas. One thing I haven’t mentioned before is that I have a road bike that also has Force E1, and I haven’t ever had this issue. So, I don’t think I’m over-cleaning, as that would probably have caused issues with the other bike. Also, the rear brake is great. I am a loyal worshipper at the Church of Dave Rome, and while it’s possible I was over-enthusiastic with my brake bed-in procedure by virtue of having the motor to assist, I don’t think that’s likely the issue, as the brake was fantastic for a while after initial bed-in. I did buy the bike new, and I’ve been really impressed with Trek’s customer service, but the closest Trek owned store is far enough away that for now my preference is to try and resolve this without going there.

@Carl_Sechrist Is “FOD” Foreign Object Damage? Thanks for the input - that really does seem like a good analysis and explanation of what likely caused this. It would certainly explain why it’s only on one brake, and I’m wondering if maybe that’s why after sanding the pads and rotor I was able to get the noise to stop for a while… until I rode on dirt again and maybe got something else or some dirt embedded in the same area?

My new 180mm rotor and adapter have arrived, and new Galfer pads are due in a few days! Hopefully that will sort it out.

@Michael_LoFaso interesting that you mentioned Sinter pads - I maybe should have ordered those instead of Galfer.

I did, however, decide to pull the trigger on ordering a Sinter brake bedding machine. I have been thinking about this for a few months now and figured now is as good a time as any. This slightly ridiculous purchase (due to the cost) is partly justified by me thinking I can offer brake bed-ins for a few $ and make back part of the purchase cost. So, if anyone reading this is in the West Los Angeles area and wants to make use of it, please reach out to me.

I want to thank everyone again for all the great ideas and input on this issue. I hope none of my response above is taken as push-back or dismissal of good ideas. I appreciate all the input, but I do need to pick and choose which paths I follow amongst all of the options given.

@LAStu How do you like your Sinter machine? I’m in Pasadena and did new pads and rotors on three of my bikes this weekend and I’m dreading bedding them in because I never seem to be able to get them totally right lol

@Mikhal_Ermalovich I really like the Sinter machine - it’s been great! I used it a few times on the bike in this thread (which I think I have eventually sorted out by using a SRAM HS2 rotor), and on a couple of other bikes too. DM me if you want to bring your bikes over and use it for them. I’m in Brentwood.

Did the SRAM HS2 rotor stop the squealing? I have the exact same sound with my front brake as well. (I listened to your attached video) My LBS is stumped. I have a 2025 SWorks Roubaix frame (bought new) w SRAM force, SRAM centerline rotors and SRAM pads. The LBS checked for leaks, replaced the pads and rotors but no change. As a Hail Mary they swapped the front and back rotors and it greatly reduced how often the nose happens on the front while there is still zero noise on the back brake. And as noted, they only squeal with light to moderate pressure on the brakes, heavy braking doesn’t seem to produce the sound. Downhill braking makes the sound more likely.

So is your squeaking resolved with the new rotor?

@Brian_Broker The HS2 rotor made things 90% better, but I upgraded the fork a few months after getting the HS2 rotor and haven’t had any noise since. I suspect it was related to the fork all along in my case, as there’s not even a hint of noise with the new fork and braking just feels much smoother.

At the shop where I took the bike they said the brake mounts didn’t need facing, but that was just based on the mechanic looking at the alignment by eye, and I wonder if that may have been the issue.

My advice is to have your LBS face the brake mounts, and if that doesn’t work, try another fork. I really suspect that in my case the HS2 rotor helped alleviate the symptoms, but didn’t solve the underlying problem.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve suspected that has been my bike’s problem all along. I’ll ask my LBS to give it a go. It’s a shame you had to get a whole new fork just to fix this.
