Does anyone remember the specific number, shown on the side of the Specialized future Shock headset collar, that was part of the recall a few years ago? Was it T73?
I’ve searched on google and some other forums but cannot find it. The Specialized page on their website goes to a page that won’t load for me.
Reason for asking is I have an older Diverge in with me today that has a loose headset and I’d typically (after adjusting the preload) hold the lower preload bolt with a thin 3mm spanner while tightening the upper locking bolt. On this bike there is no 3mm bolt to hold onto (see photos). The bolt threads you can see are definitely from the lower preload bolt as they don’t move when I rotate the upper bolt.
Is it possible that the lower preload bolt has been installed upside-down??
Nah, couldn’t be installed upside down otherwise you wouldn’t be able to get a 2mm key in there to set the preload before locking it off with the 2.5 key.
I had to do a bearing replacement on a diverge as my second job working at a Spec store. Took me a while to get my head around them!
I’ve worked on many of these before @Garth_McInerney and replaced more Futureshock headset bearings than I can remember. Just not come across one where I can’t hold the lower preload bolt.

Those are the upper (left) and lower bolts removed from the collar. No 3mm flats to hold the lower one when tightening the upper. Just wondering if that lower bolt is an older design that was replaced as part of the recall to a bolt where you could hold it securely while tightening the upper??
Spoke to another mechanic I know on Instagram who has confirmed that lockrings with the T73 numbering are not the one that were part of the recall.
He also confirmed that the lower preload screw without the 3mm flats were fitted to early versions of the futureshock collar. These were replaced at some point years ago with the, now more common, versions with the 3mm part which can be held securely while tightening the locking (upper screw).
